FYI japanese engineers are working on your next piece of american muscle over in Asia....support your country...go buy a flag...but when it comes to cars in America, everything is multinational and outsourced that an American "muscle" is really engineered, developed and mostly assembled in Asia, Mexico, Canada etc....

as for the 'ricer' haters in general...we know what we are buying...and we know that your Mustang GT can whoop our little four banger...but who the fuck cares...we aren't the ones refueling after 7 runs down the track and we certainly aren't the ones wearing AC/DC shirts and acid washed jeans...(the fad is over its 2005, let it go).

I do apologize for the guys that have giant spoilers and cheesey tailights on their hondas, and the ones that only buy an axelback to make their car sound like a lawnmower. But there are a ton of intelligent import drivers out there who look to do more than I/H/E and maybe turbo or supercharge their rides..or maybe even N/A...and those are the ones who are open minded to this whole..American vs. 'Ricer' thing going on....go ahead and be the bigger man when a little 16 year old in a fart canned civic pulls up to you...don't try and beat him..cause your only fueling the non-intelligent drivers who think that their 120 hp vic can beat your american muscle...a time to race would be when that RSX pulls next to you and you hear that turbo spooling...thats something to fuel

I like the Vette (my dad still talks about his 72 StingRay from when he was younger) but I would still take a 30K STi over it even if both were given to me. For 10K less I run with the Vette from a dig with a 4banger (would lose to it in a race from a roll though because the AWD launch would be discarded), have AWD, have 4 seats/doors, a 5star crash test rating, and a good daily driver. I'm not going to comment on looks and interior because that is totally subjective. I know the Vette is a good handling car, and I honestly don't know which is getting better road coarse times because I'm not really up on my domestic info. Plus look at realiability of Subaru vs Chevy. This year Subaru got top honors from Consumer Reports; only 8 problems per 100 vehicles (my Acura came in third and Honda second but we all know these cars will out last almost anything on the road ). I know this is only for 2004, but Subaru has change their ways the past few years and is making great products that should last. I don't think anyone with an unbiased opinion can tell me Chevy's last long and are on par with the quality of these imports. The only domestic in the top 10 was Ford at 9 (and it's Lincoln division was dead last) which surprized me that any domestic hit the top ten. If I'm wrong about the Vette having as shitty longterm reliablity as the other modern Chevy's I'm sorry.

Just my opinions

*edited* I just went and look at the base 45k 05 Vette at Chevy's website and its got more than I thought it would as far as creature comforts and gagets go. Once you add some comforts and the performace package both including some things I would have thought to be standard (including power steering, cross drilled rotors, 6 disk changer, etc) it came to 51K and with more options to add.

I didn't know this. Thanks for the info. I've done a little reseach and found that in 2000 GM bought 20% of Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) so Subaru isn't "owned" buy GM like Chevy and Cadillac. I don't think is is enough to consider Subbys "GM products" as far as quality goes. They had their own thing and then GM comes in and buys a relativly small percentage of the company. If I go buy 20% of Walmart I wouldn't get credit for it's sucess (I know this is an extreme example). I don't know how much R&D is shared between Subby and the rest of the GM lineup (if some has some real info I'd love to read it) but appearently GM isn't listening to what Subaru is saying/doing.

Jay-Z just bought a portion of the Nets, he's not coaching. He just gets money if they make a profit.

GM used the WRX chassis to build a SAAB SUV

So I think GM is "Parts binning" with Subaru now

I hate ricers but there are some imports that are hot, I'm not talking performance wise on all of them but some of them look beautiful.
My dad hates those that have "riced their shit out" too. He says they sound like a lawn mower. Like Goatman's dad, he grew up with REAL hot cars... muscle cars. His Vette Stingray can take on those stupid ass little pieces of plastic and win easily... it shuts them up REAL quick

But as Scottstown points out, they are very cost efficient (many ricers) as of today, Honda's are statistically some of the most well built cars and they dominate a lot of the market, and it's been this way for quite a few years.

But hey, I prefer American. I own a Dodge pickup. Not too great on gas mileage, but I'd like to see a Civic haul a couch and a boat.

"I mean come'on, honestly think about it rolling along the highway in your 2003 Camero Z28 and up pulls a 2000 civic si that you know is mod'ed out. Your rollin at bout 55mph you give him the sign and next thing < Skirt! Skirt! Zoom >. . . . . he's gone."

The Civic would have to be *heavily* modded, and the Camaro driver would have to be an incompetent driver. In most situations an even bone-stock LS1 Camaro will crush even a Jackson S/C'ed Civic (if you have the money to tune a Civic beyond that, you should have invested in a Supra, 300ZX, etc if you insist on an import.)

Ricers have an attitude bolstered by the fictional "Fast and Furious" movies....it isn't limited to Japanese cars. There are plenty of Cavaliers, Saturns, Focuses, and even Mustangs that have been "riced out."

nope, love'em. never been in to speed and big boxy "muscle" cars. i'm totally for show, in everything except computer parts because they all look the same anyway. it's the only time when speed matters.

I don't think anyone here has mentioned that most people "rice" up their cars to just to get attention and not for acceleration. They don't want to go fast. They just want to stand out so people would turn their heads as they pass by.

I have respect for all cars. I'll admit that I am more biased towards the import side, although I want to own a Corvette and a Viper someday. The only gripe about American cars is their lack of technology and efficiency. Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC), variable valve timing, 4 valves/cyclinder etc. helps get the most power potential from the engine. For example I'll compare the specs of the popular mid-size sedan segment:

2005 Pontiac Gran Prix
3.8L V6
200HP 230TQ

2005 Nissan Maxima
3.5L V6
265HP 255TQ

2005 Honda Accord
3.0L V6
240HP 212TQ

2005 Pontiac Gran Prix GTP
3.8L V6 *Supercharged*
260HP 280TQ

2005 Toyota Camry
3.0L V6
210HP 220TQ

3.3L V6 (Optional)
225HP 240TQ

2005 Ford Tarus
3.0L Vulcan V6
153HP 186TQ

3.0L Duratec V6 (Optional)
202HP 207TQ

As you can see the most power came from a N/A 3.5L. The most torque, surprisingly, came from a supercharged 3.8L engine . Perhaps the most striking is the Ford Taurus. The old-school Vulcan V6, even with the same displacement, makes almost 50 horsepower and 20 lb-ft torque less than the newer OHC, 4-valve/cyclinder Duratec V6 but still no comparison to Honda's 3.0L V6 which has about a 40 horsepower advantage. Compare the Maxima 3.5L and the Gran Prix 3.8L. The Maxima makes 65 more horsepower and 15 more lb-ft torque than the Gran Prix while still giving up 300cc of displacement. Honda's 3.0L V6 makes 40 more horsepower than GM's 3.8L V6. BTW, Nissan and Honda both have a 300 horsepower 3.5L V6 in the 350Z and Acura RL.

Domestics automakers are are starting to implement newer design into their products. The Ford Focus SVT uses DOHC design and variable valve timing to produce 170 horsepower from 2.0 liters. Not bad. Unfortunately slow sales of the Focus SVT has forced Ford to discontinue it from the Focus line recently.

People complain about VTEC and the fact that you have to rev so high to get the power. VTEC is an ingenious idea for street cars. It allows a car to run a race-spec camshaft and a mild street-spec cam on one camshaft. This means great power potential with a rock solid idle (no loping). Peak power will be at around 6000rpm. Kinda high for some people but "true" race cars need to rev high for a broad powerband to compete (Yes, even NASCAR engines make peak power at 8000rpm). Still some would rather want their power and torque down low, which is fine. For me, personally, I want my engine running its full potential.

Yep, I have this kid with a "domestic rice" Escort (newer one) that insists on fucking with me everytime I see it. It has the worst exterior mods I have every seen a 4" tip fart can and thinks its the shit. I mean it's an Escort, I leave it cars behind before out of second (I can't resist raping him sometimes). They are plenty of other domestics around here that have watched that movie one to many times. It was an ok flick, but it can abunch of kids some crazy ideas. The Need For Speed Underground games have done more damage in my opinion. You all most have to put on big body kits, neon lights, huge wings, vynals, and other stupid shit to get your "rating" up. Kids play this and think this is what they need to do to their car to make it look kewl. Their parents give them the family 120hp Caviler and they "hook it up" and think they have a Paul Walker 10sec car.
