It absolutely boggles my mind how states in the US can "legally" ban gay marriage without Supreme Court intervention. the US Supreme Court is far too political in my opinion and bends to the political will of those who appointed them and their own personal prejudices. If they would treat this issue objectively and consistent with their previous decisions, they would have to accept a case challenging the exclusion of gay couples from being able to marry on certiorari and rule that marriage between homosexuals is a privacy issue. The Court has already ruled that essentially every other family issue (including marriage between straight couples, divorce, birth control, child-rearing) is protected by an umbrella of privacy that cannot be interfered with by the state- excluding the protection of gay marriage is inconsistent with all of these positions.

it seems in today's "society" that the government especially in the US is trying to focus attention on issues that dont concern them, i.e. gay marriage in an effort to take the limelight off of the corruption on capital hill.
i thought the US was founded on freedom...which i thought encompassed everything...not just the items that the government feels should be a freedom...where do they get off dictating how two people feel about each other...if their souls are united...then let them legally marry so they have a piece of paper so that they to can share in what few privilages it can mean for them (tax breaks, etc.)
'nuff said!

If this is allowed where does it end, I love my dog, can I marry her too?

Your girlfriend IS a dog or looks like a dog ?

Seriously, any human should be able to marry any other human.

Despite my being in agreement with him on this particular issue, Olbermann is such a goddamn overly dramatic tool.

Yeah ok...he's over dramatic...but he's right. I especially enjoyed the last minute or so.

Yeah, he did have some legitimate points.

I have a present for him.

Bla bla bla, compelling only if you ignore the fact that he's making the argument that Prop 8 somehow denies gay couples the right to be together, the right to live together, sleep together, be happy, feel intimacy, and on and on. Prop 8 doesn't do any of that, it simply says the term marriage refers to hetero couples, not gay couples.

If you're left-handed, then your left-handed. If you want to be called right-handed, then learn to use your other damn hand.

At one time it was illegal for gay couples to live together, and sleep together. Before prop 8...the final hurdle to being treated like everyone else (at least in Cali) when it came to mariage was lifted...now with prop 8 a step backwards has been taken. I honestly don't understand how you would be affected by this...how would your life change if gay marriage was legal all over the US? Can someone explain that to me?

Prop 8 wasn't about gay marriage per say. It was about a civil union. Here in FL we had the same prop, ( prop #3). Baptist's wanted it passed for the sake of the wording and the bible. What they didn't think about or didn't care about older people who live together, help each other and for all intents married but not lawfully. Should something happen to one of those people, their partner wouldn't be able to help them or be helped by that person should something bad happen. Think of your grandparents who perhapts had their husband or wife die and now live with someone else just as special but haven't gotten around to marriage, perhaps for money reasons. Should something happen to them their "other" would be prevented from helping that person.

I'm done writing as I think that some Americans forget what America is all about and why we were so strong. Were just a bunch of biggits, at least in the South now

No it was not. This is Prop 8.... this is ALL of Prop 8. It defines the term "marriage" and that is ALL it does.

Quote:
PROP 8
ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME–SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

* Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.
* Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Prop 8 does not do anything other than restore the traditional definition of "marriage"
California code already gaurantees same sex "domestic partners" every right that a "married couples" have.

Quote:
FAMILY.CODE
SECTION 297.5.a
Registered domestic partners shall have the same rights,
protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same
responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law
, whether they
derive from statutes, administrative regulations, court rules,
government policies, common law, or any other provisions or sources
of law, as are granted to and imposed upon spouses.

Here's the whole code. Read it for yourself.

I keep reading about gay "culture". Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't being gay simply a sexual preference? Other then a sexual preference with a person of the same sex, where, oh where is the "culture"? How does a sexual preference relegate you into a different "culture"? Yes, please respond.

No. It is a physiological 'alteration' in whom people find sexually attractive.

That's like asking why you choose to be attracted to women. (Assuming you're a fella, obv.)

As for culture, well, that's a bit of a definitional issue, IMO. Any group of like-thinking people that congregate in any way can technically consider themselves to be part of a 'culture'.
