For The Americans - Geography Question About Europe

I think the extent to which I learned about Europe in High School can be summed up like this: "Yup, it's there."

Seriously, we learned about Leif Erikson (excuse the spelling if I got it wrong), and a BASIC overview of WWI & WWII. But, for the most part, my High School's history department was pretty bad. I learned much more during college (names of countries, capitals, important people, etc.) and this was also during the time when the Soviet Union was breaking up, so we also got a major lesson in the new countries in Asia.

Personally, I love history. If I had it to do all over again, I would have gotten a degree in History and/or Archeology instead of Business... But, thanks to my experience (or lack thereof) in High School, I still feel like I am playing catch-up when it comes to my knowledge of the world. It's so much easier to understand what is going on now (especially when it comes to conflicts) when you know what happened in the past.

What's the deal with all the questions about Denmark? I thought the topic was...For The Americans - Geography Question About Europe. Most americans probably know more about England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany and so forth. Reading this, so far it seems to be about Denmark, Santa Claus, the Cookie Monster and Jay Leno.
As for what Americans know or don't know about Europe, I think a lot also has to do with where you are in America. If you are from someplace metropolitan like New York or California or something, your world view may be a lot different than in say, Pigs Knuckle Arkansas or somewhere like that.
By the way...there is no Santa Claus...yeah I said it! What! What!

I think a part of our lack of interest in history is due to the fact that a large majority of North Americans are more concerned with where they're going not where they came from or how they got there(thats just my personal experience)

In response to the orginal question:

During school, unless you take a specific course on Europe you most likely not going to learn anything about much of Denmark. Thats at the college level. K-12 grades are a joke for learning anything except two things: one, if your good at the educational system of learning, they prep you for college; and two if you aren't, the prep you for working at the mall.
Honestly, I learn more about the world from Tom Clancy's books then through K-12 and two years of college. It's totally our fault too. Currently, the oligolopies that rule us underlings have us fighting each other to impliment "no child left behind" policies so that everyone has the skills to fill out bullshit-level sales job applications legibly, not to mention we are just now starting to realize that our overwieght population of children in school might benifit from removing soda and candy machines from school property.
I'll admit that my knowlegde of your area was mostly learned from playing Age of Empires II and the History Channel.

For example, look at your own family name.
Tell us what it is and we will tell you whare you came from.
Or else tell us the family name of someone you know, that's much easier, perhaps.

My name is John David Henry ya ass.

edit: changed Name to name

Whether University educated or not (fuck you Harman) a lot of people are reasonably intelligent..but our culture is very insular, I guess for all the aforementioned reasons. However, just because a large segment of the American population chooses a career out of high school over college..doesn't make us dumb. The working class are the backbone of any great nation. I think you would be surprised to find how many people in America are familar with Scandanavian culture..i.e. the Mid-West. Most of the Dakotas and some surrounding states have big populations of Scandanavian descent.
