The problem is, most of America is ignorant, meaning that they could care less about things that don't concern them. It's a shame, really. I know the basics of Europe. It's a great place, from what I hear.

the reason most of america is ignorant is because as a world power we have trained our kids that not much else matters but america

we learn it all its just that us being dumb americans we don't retain any information we don't find useful so we basically forget about geography and all of Social Studies unless your planning on going into a related field

Well I'll say this..I love America..but yeah to be quite honest most of my countrymen are geo-pol retarded. It stems from the shitty education we get. Yes Math and Science are important..but our school system puts the most emphasis on these subjects because they are seen as the building blocks for college and future careers. I for one sucked at math...never went higher than Geometry..but excelled at history and English, and I love my job and English and History made me good at what I do. I'm somewhat familiar with Scandanavian history mostly Viking Era-Present. I think Sweden and Denmark are kick ass countries that America should've built a better relationship with. People call the US a hegemony...fuck I'm scared to death of the economic giant that China is becoming..not thrilled about another Communist superpower with a history of human right's abuses. Anyway thats off topic..in short Scandanavia rocks..nice area of the world...relatively low crime..liberal drug laws...hot chics...and a culture of drinking. The only downside is that I don't speak any sort of Nordic dialect..and that shit is to crazy for me to learn at 22.

But when Americans are asked about Europe, they dont know much about it.
So i was wondering, when youre in school, what do you learn about Europe?
In Denmark, we learn alot about the whole world, from Denmark and all over Mother earth.
We learn the contries in Africa, America and so on.
Ive meet some young Americans online at the age of 17-24, and they didnt know about Scandinavia, and didnt know alot about Europe. They knew about France and Germany and that was about it.
So i was just wondering what you learn in school about Europe.
We learn about the states and the capitols of the states.
Not because your a big country, but because your part of our world.
And dont tell me that its because Denmark is a small small small country, like somebody once told me in here

So did you learn all about the Mexican states? What about the Indian states?

Anyone who believes a view of the world from watching Jay Leno make fun of people is acting very foolishly.

You've got a point there, JeffNimrod...

I really think that the rest of the world looks at the US differently than the US looks at the rest of the world-- not because it has anything to do with recent events or quality of schools, but that the US is primarily made up of folks from everywhere-- so most countries have some sort of "tie" to the US, whereas the US (collectively speaking) has no real identification to or of any one specific country...

While the majority of the US is primarily of Euro descent, I think that for the most part, country-specific identities are lost on the US population-- sure, there's a lot of Italians, Irish, etc found clustered together in certain areas... but there is no one set collective "National Identity" based on the counties from which we came... Hell, we're mutts!

So, I guess to answer to original question, I would say that most US high schools do not put a great emphasis on the study of a specific country other than our own-- though on the aggregate, I would say that our knowledge and study of Europe is much greater than that of Africa or Asia... but that goes back to my "where we came from" argument.

i moved to the us 10 years ago from europe and have to agree. I was even asked how i learnt armerican so fast having moved from england (yes she was blonde) After a couple of years i got a job at an airport and the people i worked with would ask me what state planes were coming from if it wasnt one that directly bordered their own. I felt like i was on jay-walking at times.

i moved to Europe from USA 5 years ago. I know about Hans Christian Anderson. He was in The Matrix right . j/k Mr Anderson, was a famous writer.

its true that many americans dont know shit abot Europe, 8 out of 10 refer to Switzerland as Sweden, even after I tell them like 3 times the difference.

Some of us learn the stuff they teach us.. we do have geography lessons about the whole world.. and some of us choose to learn more on our own.

I find it kind of sad that some peopl choose to bash america's intelligence thread after thread...

he just asked a question, and a valid one...americans dont know much about europe...the ones who did most if not all of the american bashing were americans themselves..

but also why should americans have to know much about europe anyways? are they your main trading partners? are americans constantly going to Europe? if they are, theyll learn it there....here in OZ were not ignorant..but why should i HAVE to know anything about Denmark, france, germany or any other european country....or even the US..i dont NEED to..most of our trade is done with Asia, thats our region..so if im interested ill find out about europe or the US..but im not going to allow it to be forced down my throat...

i dont see why its such a big deal

That was the same experience I had in school... Everything about Europe today (not ancient or old world Europe) has to be learned on your own or through other means...

I don't think this thread is an attack on american intelligence, I think it merely highlights the perception that americans are very insular when it comes to the rest of the world

which seems like a gross generalisation
