Well, are your answers make sense, but the true is otherwise. As you all said so, geography and history is related. In school courses and in history. For exemple, currently everybody know where is New York, because of the 9/11 event, etc.

USA and Canada where found not so long ago, so we do have way less history then Europe. Besides, in the long run, we almost all come from Europe and UK. So it is normal that we have less history and less interests in history. Does that make sense to you?

i think thats the point most of those " i`m proud to be american " always forget.. if you dont look like a

you are NO! those people can, you better shut up about * i am a native american and can be proud about.... *

Until Denmark does anything worth while or contributes to world history in some small way then maybe we'll take a minute to learn about you. Until then, keep on walking around the windmills in your wooden shoes.

Windmills and wooden shoes? That's Holland you fucking 'tard. You just proved your own ignorance. Danes aren't people who wear wooden shoes or have Windmills. They are cheeky fuckers who think they can erect their flags on Canadian Arctic territory! Get it straight!

I more or less resent that. It's true, that Holland is known for its windmills and woodenshoes, and yes, you do have a fair amount of said (that and cows, by the way...), but it's not true, that we, the denemarkians, do not use woodenshoes (A.K.A, I believe, "click clogs" or windmills. In fact, we own one of the worlds largest windmill factories, Vestas (formerly the largest).
These are just modern windmills, and aren't used for grinding flour. Woodenshoes we have too, but we were smart enough to actually invent a way more comfortable one with leather, in stead of those 100% wood, with an inlay of straw (see pics at bottom.)

Also, last time I posted I forgot 2 very important things:
1. Arla Foods Amba. Yurops largest dairy, and one of the worlds largest too - they even produce in the great U.S. of A.!
2. Swines!!!!111 Denmarks largest export. I'm willing to bet, that most of the time you Yuropanians are eating bacon, it's danish - and there ain't nothing you can do about it!

Holland's woodenshoes:

Denmarks woodenshoes:

It won't be big enough if we keep letting puny countries have pieces of it, bit by bit!! Give them an inch, they take a mile!! or a whole Island for that matter! If we don't put our foot down now, when will it stop??? We all know what happened when they let Germany take Czechoslovakia!!!

We learned about the French Revolution, Otto van Bismarck, and Germany's role in World Wars I and II. I think that's about it as far as European History goes

For example, look at your own family name.
Tell us what it is and we will tell you whare you came from.
Or else tell us the family name of someone you know, that's much easier, perhaps.

My name is John David Henry ya ass.

[/reply]

With your name I can have some choises for countries, unfortunately.
The easy one: English
The less easy one: French
And even one which might not look like obvious at all: Dutch

The first one explains itself and with the second one you just have to pronounce it in French. There is a larg number of people called Henri in France, you know. (With the I instead of the Y.)

But the Dutch one needs some explaining.

When Napoleon started the introduction of last names, some people where really serious about picking a "normal" last name, since their ofpsring would also get that same name.
Some people make fun with it, because they thought it was going to blow away as soon as Napoleon would leave again.
Thus names like Spring in de wei (jump in the meddow) Naaktgeboren (bornnaked). You can find funny names like that all over the world. Now you know why.

But other people did not know what name to choose and since it was custom to be called something like jacob hendrik's zoon (Jacobs Hendrik's son) that took the name of that father as their last name. So this guy became Jake Hendriks.
Now Hendriks might have been too difficult when a Dutch family came over to the US, so it was modified to Henry.

But you name is not the easiest one to find it's origin.

If you ever find out yourself, I would really like to know the real origin, just to see, how close I got.

On the subject of schools, I read a letter in a newspaper from someone who had a school teacher as a friend. He has 30 kids in his class, he teaches one of the sciences I think, and most of the kids say he is a bad teacher because they fail tests/exams. Only 2 or 3 pupils pass the tests/exams. But if they are all taught the same thing at the same time why dont the majority get the same grades as the others? The teacher in question is leaving the education system because he is fed up with being called bad when in fact it's the pupils who can't be bothered to learn.
On a comment about sending kids to school in England, make sure it's what we call a public school ie one where you pay for your child to go. Ass backwards or what, public schools are private education establishments.
Our son is in a state primary school(elementary school) but we moved him to a different one 2 years ago as his old school was full of idiots who's parents are on benefits (welfare) with no proper father-figure in their lives. Consequently, our son wasn't learning anything. He would have the same reading book for 2 or 3 weeks despite repeated requests for it to be changed. He is a bright kid and wanted to learn but when you are in a class of 30+ kids, at least 10 of which are distruptive, what chance do you have.
Since moving schools he has caught up with his new classmates and even surpassed some of them, he has a new reading book every day and spelling tests every week (which he passes due to us ensuring that he practices every day after school before bring allowed to play with his friends).
I think a lot of the problems in schools and education is that parents do not take the responsibility to ensure that their children do their homework and learn more at home.
There is also a disturbing lack of respect for teachers among both parents and children. When a child gets told off for misbehaving, the parents reaction is not "what did you do to get told off?" but "how dare you chastise my child" and they have an argument with the teacher in front of the child. What example does that set? When our son has done something wrong and been told off for it, he also gets a telling off from us because we have taught him right from wrong and what is acceptable behaviour and what is not.
If respect and acceptable behaviour are not reinforced in a home environment, what chance does a school have of instilling it when the child knows that their parent either wont do anything about their conduct or will defend the child regardless of the seriousness of their misbehaviour.
Sorry to rant, but the decline in education standards, I believe, is down to a lack of respect and discipline both in parents and children. Before you bash me, I am a parent and I have children and what I am saying comes from my own experience of having a child in the present education system.

Thanks mate.

I have done some short studies about this kind of things some years ago, when I was trying to locate some relatives of mine all over the world.
Most of their names have been translated into the local language, just like my name was translated into Dutch.

But in your case, how close was I ?

The truth of the matter (in my mind) is that in Elementary/High School the "Social Studies" teachers focus on America's history. When we learned about European history it was a frame of reference on that country's culture, during a time of war that USA was in. Other than that it was Vikings/Greece/Rome/British Arm./Spanish Arm./then WWs.
It is not until college that we are exposed to a more 'worldly' approach to education. That is why so many college students have so much apathy, we realized how micro our education/society is!

Ok smart ass, how many states in Australia?
Don't know??? Why not, isn't it big enough for you?

Every American kid knows who Hans Christian Anderson is, they all have been reading his stories, if they don't remember then it isn't important to them. Big deal, get over it. Besides there was a movie about him too!

Pirate, you love English? is that American English or the Queens English, cause in England they can't stand how the Yanks have butchered their language.

Americans are brainwashed from birth into thinking American is the best place in the world when it actually it ranks #6 http://www.aneki.com/quality.html in "Quality of life".

Fact is less than 10% of Americans travel OS so why do they need to know anything about Denmark?

Patriotism, America is #1 and that is a good thing!
