For The Americans - Geography Question About Europe

I was wondering, nothing bad about the Americans or anything, let me point that out to start with.
But when Americans are asked about Europe, they dont know much about it.
So i was wondering, when youre in school, what do you learn about Europe?
In Denmark, we learn alot about the whole world, from Denmark and all over Mother earth.
We learn the contries in Africa, America and so on.
Ive meet some young Americans online at the age of 17-24, and they didnt know about Scandinavia, and didnt know alot about Europe. They knew about France and Germany and that was about it.
So i was just wondering what you learn in school about Europe.
We learn about the states and the capitols of the states.
Not because your a big country, but because your part of our world.
And dont tell me that its because Denmark is a small small small country, like somebody once told me in here

It's cuz Denmark is such a small small country.


They teach about it in world history and world geography but I think most don't retain the knowledge cuz they never really need to use it.

In Canada all we really learn about is North American History....the only things we learn about Europe are when it pertains to us as well.

So you dont learn anything about HC Andersen? Niels Bohr and Greenland ?

Well, I don't know him personally.

I think I learned about him in Reading class in high school or maybe even before highschool. Not sure. All I remember really is that he's a famous writer.

A lot depends on where and when a person went to school. The current trend is "Dumbing Down" the school kids so they will not be tramuatized by "Failing", so as long as the little shits can write/print there name its on to the next grade. This way the school will not get sued by some asshole parent who thinks there kid is the next Nobel Prize winner. I'm a bit over 25 (close to 2X) and we learned a lot about Europe, the capitols, Industry etc. Can't say for the younger crowd.

If i said Denmark to you guys, what would you respond? What do you know about us people from Denmark?
Do you know our Capitol? Do you know where in the world Denmark is? Do you know what people from Denmark are called?
Without looking it up on the internet?

In elementary school i remember learning about the world in 2 weeks or so, we basically got an overview of everything, nothing was really in-depth. in the high school i had a sort class on the world that mainly looked at WW1 and WW2 and the middle-east, but i can honestly say that nothing from that class is in my head anymore, i never payed attention. i wouldn't really expect to hear much out of an american about the rest of the world unless if it's on the news in america. in our fair land, here in america, we only know what's going on in the news, our lives, and our entertainment. and don't get me wrong there are an intelligent few, i saw one once, but mostly everyone is the same here.

Americans dont know much of anything, and its not necessarily their fault. The problem is that the school system rewards students who remember things for tests and essays, but do not care if a student actually learns anything. Yes we were taught all about Scandanavia and the rest of Europe, problem is that most of the students aren't very interested in things like history or geography, so it goes in their memory for the test, and right back out once the test is over. Americans are way to career and goal oriented, and don't give a shit about actually being a knowledgable person.

There was this thing on Jay Leno once, where he asked people on the street about things and people in Scnadinavia, ex what is the name of the capitol of France and somebody said Germany, and they asked what people from Denmark are called, and people said Dutch, Denemarkians and so on..
I couldnt stop laughing...
And its still not anything bad about Americans.
I just find it funny.

i actually knew that....our schools suck but i actually have an interest in world history....just haven't got around to HC Anderson yet
