Because of the FCC censorship. The shackles are now off so lets see if he's worth the half bil paycheck.

i personly dont think any one is worth half a bill. but you got to remember he is not getting all of that. that gose to him but he has to pay his people with that cash and some show related cost. but of that 100mill a year say he pays all his people 20mill show cost he has to pay for 10mill he is still getting 70mill and i swtill think that is to much.

in responce to what sept68 said about the fcc i would belive that if other people didn't rise as he was falling because of it. i do think that did have some effect but if he is that good he would continue to rise no matter what the rules are.

That's bullshit. Everyone in radio has to play by the same FCC rules as Howard. Other radio shows figured out how to make a great radio program within those guidelines why can't howard? Why could he make a great radio show in the 80's and 90's with FCC guidelines but he can't in the past few years?
the man has thrown in the towel and is looking for his last big pay day. Have fun paying for 4 days a week of radio and 12 weeks of vacation. I think that's less the 6 months of actual radio.

Ok on the finanicals. I disagree that he has fallen. Developed a backlash, yes. Falling no. How do you rate success? Radio station ratings? Paycheck? Name recognition? Syndication? Stern is still decades ahead. Being in the midwest, I had never heard of Opie and Anthony until they got fired. Not saying that they aren't good. They just never made it to the level of Stern.

Globally, most people hate Pres. George W. Bush but that has not stopped him from being the most powerful man in the world.

When one goes under financially, if the other can afford to make the purchase, the two will merge. if not, you'll have an XM or Sirius Satelite receiver that doubles as a paperweight.

Radio SHOULD be free. Without local radio, who would you call to win free tickets, who would you call in your requests to? and who would you bug every morning that there's snow wondering if school is cancelled?

Satelite radio may have a "7th caller" who wins, but what good does it do when the winner is always a half continent away?

If you're just purchasing the reciever to buy the right to hear naughty words like "fuck" "shit" "poopchute" or whatever, I would suggest you buy CDs instead. You can be sure that regulations will come from the powers that be in the FCC. Is it fair? Some would say yes... some say no. But who ever said that laws were all fair?

Yes in theory, everyone has to play by the rules. The reality is that the more people listen to your show, the more likely you are to be punished. Do you know how the FCC works? They don't monitor every brodcast out there. The largely rely on listner complaints. Every complaint is extrapilated into a listner percentage. Its like one complaint would represent the 10,000 people offended. So 10 people call in you got 100,000 complaints. My ratio might be wrong but this is the general concept. Stern was nationally sydicated in probably hundreds more radio markets than the next closest "shock jock". The more people that listen to you, the more likely you will get a complaint. Howard has not really changed. The FCC has gotten more agressive in there inforcement. However, Stern's main problem was with his employers. Infinity Brodcasting was tired of the FCC fines. They are the one who actually pulled in the reigns. He had already been dumped by Clear Channel in '04. If he had a boss who was willing to back him up and challange the FCC in court, he probably would have stayed on the public air waves.

Question back to you Shroom - Who are those other successful "shock jocks" on public air? Keep in mind O/A and Bubba the Love Sponge were canned so they don't count.

BTW, I'm not saying Sirius got a fair deal.

I guess you are someone that does not "Get" what Satelitte radio is all about. THe reason people get it is so they don't have to hear hacky radio DJ's do stupid little call-in and win contest. So they don;t have to hear 20-25 minutes of comercials an hour. And they don;t get it so they can hear swear words and naughty things.

They get it because there are a hundred different channels with different music types that you don't hear on your regular radio. THey get it so they don;t ahve to listen to the same 10 songs being played 3 times a day everyday. Satelitte RAdio has a diverse a deep collection of songs that you don;t hear on regular radio. It also provides National News and National talk shows that you might not get in your town/city.

That is why people get satelitte radio.

Stern was never sydicated into hundreds of markets
If you read up on it, Stern has been sydicated in about 35-40 markets accross the country. Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are sydicated into over 400 markets. Stern has only been syndicated in BIG CITY'S that can afford him. In reality Stern going to Siruis will be his first "National show"

As for other "shock Jocks" there are only a few that have/had actual syndication deals. Lykis, Don and Mike, O&A, Imus and Mancow are the only other ones that had major sydication deals close to Sterns. Bubba had 3 or 4 markets and same with Lex and Terry, Bob and Tom and Mark and Brian

As for "succesful shock jocks" Bubba was never one. He was syndicated in only a few markets. As for O&A they were not canned by the FCC, they were canned by Infinity because the religious right was up their ass about the "Sex For Sam Stunt". Some other jocks are Lex and Terry, Imus and Don and Mike. They have the sames rules.

It's funny how O&A made a name for themselves in the same 10 years Stern was doing sub-par radio even though they both had the same FCC rules.

You win the biggest TOOL award.

TV used to be free too, now we all pay for cable. same concept. "Free" radio is plagued with TONS AND TONS of fucking commercials. I actually listened to that "FREE FM" (the new format the stations carrying Adam Corola or David Lee Roth are on) while i did some house work and they were in commercial break for 25 minutes. Free my ass... you pay somehow.

NOTHING IS FREE.

O&A made their name (if any) doing afternoon radio. Against Stern they wouldn't have stood a chance. Stenr STARTED in afternoon then came to morning and crushed everybody.

Shitty shows like Limbaugh get syndicated cuz they cost shit and don't demand top advertising dollar. Imus blows.

Should have said this earlier. I am not a Stern fan. However, I do respect what he has accomplished. He is a radio personality is a niche market. Those other jocks... do they have a best selling autobiography? A crappy Hollywood movie about their lives? Cable TV shows? News media drooling over them. No!!! Eventhough he feels he is subpar, everyone keeps throwing money and attention at him. Sirius is taking a gamble that I would never had made. If Stern doesn't deliver the subscribers, Sirius is done.

Well, I got my Radio and XM service.

I have a Delphi XM Skyfi2. The only gripe I have to make is that there is no Stern, but that would be the only thing that Sirius offered different that could've swayed my decision. I love all the rock stations and the 80's and 90's decade stations.

Thanks again for the help and continue your satillite conversation.

Hey shroomman, my wife has XM and I have listened to "Extreme 202". I'll tell you this, I won't call O&A Howard Stern clones. You wanna know why, sure you do. They aren't on the same level as Howard, they don't even deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph. That XM 202 station sucks. And then they have another show on that shitty station called "Ron&Fez" XM must have some leftover time to fill because that has to be the biggest waste of airtime I have ever heard. O&A, not even close to funny, Ron&Fez, to say they suck is a compliment. I bought my Sirius radio along with 5000 shares of stock the day Howard made the anouncement. I doubled my money on the stock, sold it to take profits, and I listen to Sirius about 10 hours a day. And as far as XM being in better financial shape remember they are owned by GM and the last time I looked that's a company that's takin' a huge shit.

artie before i go any further are you the artie lang that works for howard. if so then i dont think you can give a fair thought because you get paid buy howard and sirius if you are going i havent kept tabs on if you are or arent.

I didnt know GM owned XM, If thats the case then worst comes to worst they would just EASILY sell it off to another company.

I bought my parents a Sirius setup for xmas. I first went into best buy, first thing I saw was XM displays ALL OVER the store, 17.99 for a XM setup, (damn cheap!) I thought to myself damn XM is everywhere, Then when I found the Sirius displays they were all empty. not a single radio!!!!!

I went to 4 different stores only to find sirius radios I didnt care for, (left overs) last place I stoped was the local radio shack and the guy there laughed at me when I asked if they were getting anymore in before xmas, I then went home got online and tracked down a local radio shack that had what I was looking for. Thankfully I found one.

I really wish I liked XM more becuase they were everywhere, XM is pushing their products all over the place. too bad they're not moving anywhere near as fast as the Sirius radios. even at the starting price of $17.99!!!! dirt cheap!

Anywho, Im still pissed at XM for playing USPS ads on their music stations. so F them.

I'm sorry, you are right it is "High Voltage". I thought I saw Extreme somewhere in the display but who knows, I may have been really loaded at the time. I am not the real Artie Lange, just thought that would be a funny screen name. I really have nothing against XM, like I said my wife has it in her car and I listen to it when traveling with her vehicle. I just get sick of these O&A fanboys ranting about how great they are. I remember when they went to XM and there was nowhere near the buzz in the press as there has been with Howard going to Sirius. If you are a Howard fan or not you have to admit, he has brought allot of attention to satellite radio, obviously Sirius benfits more but I think XM also gets a boost from Howards move.

well as we all can tell i am a O&A fan have been since the early wnew days but i will also admit i like howard. i think his show has gone down hill alot and i just cant really get into it as much as i use to. I will agree with who ever said it earlier he has had a great career and he dose have a big following but i feel that he has gone down hill with his show. when O&A went to xm you are right they didnt get as much press but they did get some. i dont know who got more prob. howard did. This i htik is because they were off the air for 2 1/2 years before they camne back to radio. if howard had the same time off i dont think he would get as much exposure as he did. i will have to also admit that is because he has had a bigger and longer carrer. I personly still find the boys funnier and more entertaining. ya there show isnt always great but i have never seen any show (tv or radio) that was always 100%. One thing with O&A that alot of people dont relise there show will be funny right away but there is stuff that makes the show even better once you have listen for a while. you know like you have inside jokes with your freinds it is the same thing there.
