With valid id you can get a 15% off list discount on any Apple computer. The hilarious irony of this is that the people that buy them are the ones that would be unaffected by the discount. ( Blame some of that on our zip code and the rest on peer pressure....something a marketer never forgets.) Lastly, while no department is exclusive[i], in engineering and math there is a distinct bias toward Windows based machines.

All that said, I think that for 90% of us that the choice has more to do with comfort/familiarity.

The difference is that Apple includes anti virus software within their OS, so there is no need to buy and install a 3rd party app. I've never bought 3rd party anti virus software for any of my macs, and I've never gotten a virus. If I were a PC user and never bought anti virus software in 10 years, I doubt I could make the same claim.

And yes, I will agree that Apple are remarkable at marketing themselves, but they don't really market the fact...when was the last time you saw a commercial for Mac? I'm sure there have been some lately, but all I can remember is the Mac vs PC guys...and that was YEARS ago. They market other products like iphone and ipad A LOT...and by doing so, they hope there is a trickle down effect from people who had good experiences with their iproducts, eventually upgrading to a new Mac. Also...they have major incentives for students...thats why you see a lot on campus.

True, and people who are very familiar with computers may use linux, and may swap out components of better quality, and may know which virus software is free and good, but your average computer user doesn't. So thats where over a 7 year life span on a computer a Mac may be just as affordable. $50-$60 per year on anti virus software and lets say they upgrade to a new OS once at $100-$150. In total thats a $450 to $570 savings, which is is probably about the cost difference compared to a similarly built and featured PC....its close anyway.

So you're telling it's better to stay ignorant and waste 500/1000€ more on a Mac than just take 10minutes (or ask a friend) to find a good free antivirus (and maybe a "free" windows) ?
There's nothing complicated or time consuming in learning how to handle a PC nowadays, at least for general uses.

Not necessarily. At a lot of those types of places, the bartenders split tips. I know dudes that loved working at sports bars with female co workers. While the girls talk to and flirt with the customers, the guys work service bar, bar-back and do all sorts of other stuff that doesn't involve kissing some douche-bag's ass. At the end of the night, you split all the money. The girl thinks she's got it made because she does little physical work and as a dude, I'd rather pour service drinks and fill ice bins than deal with people.

Does "everything we touch" count as incuding Macs?

My sister wanted a mac solely because "people won't like me if I have a windows computer" which is about the most laughable thing I've ever heard, and it's pretty fucking evil that their marketing campaign (among many other factors) have led people to believe that bullshit. I couldn't really talk her out of that either because 20 year old girl.

So while surfing aimlessly through channels one station had a specialist come on and say "always get a consent text first beforehand."

Kinda surprised that thought didn't occur before now. I mean we do everything by text nowadays.

I 'm so proud of my wonderful wife. About a week ago an armadillo decided to commit suicide by walking in front of our car. It bounced up and tore up our radiator and fan assembly. She has a friend with a garage she can work in and tools she could use. She went to the salvage yard and got replacement parts. Took out the old parts put everything back together, just to find out the new radiator was busted, so she had to take it out and put another one in. When she took it to at for a test drive it still over heated. Another garage found out it was a heat sensor, so she replaced it. And now every thing is fine,,we hope.. She did all this while holding down two jobs. I love her with all my heart and couldn't have found a better life partner.

I'm not saying its better, I'm saying its how it is. My parents for example, I got sick and tired of "fixing" their computer all the time. They were constantly getting malware and viruses, and even with a anti virus software they didn't do updates or set it to scan when they weren't using it. They bought a new computer a few years ago, and I insisted they buy a mac...with the exception of helping them with the odd application, or changing a setting for them, I haven't had to "fix" anything. They could be out of the norm...but I'm willing to bet there are hundreds of millions of users just like them.

Wow...huge kudos to your wife. Might I suggest buying her a little something special for Christmas.

Your Youtube link isn't working...probably Diz playing around with something, because embedded youtube links make idevices crash.

Anyway...It probably is marketing Macs as well, but isn't solely an add for Mac. Its more of a branding add. Does Apple really market their products in a way that makes people believe they won't be cool if they don't have one? I'm not entirely sure they do. I mean...no more than anyone else does I think. Tech companies in particular want their device to be the most desirable...they all try and capture that cool factor. And there may have been a point in time when Apple tried to do this, but I think its unfathomably difficult to successfully market a product as cool...only the consumers will make decide that. When watching the latest iPhone 5S commercial...I don't really see anything that says "buy me because I'm the coolest phone."

My what a pink phone you have

Also, Apple doesn't say that, but it's what some people get out of the message (and then the richer kids buying macs and then they become a thing everyone has to have if they want to be cool, etc., etc.)

That's what I'm saying. Better pay extra dollar than educate people. And that's how Apple is making their money, either by attracting ignorant people (who'll buy a top tier Mac just to go on facebook and avoid viruses) or trendy people who can't imagine not doing like the others (EL example is self explanatory). The only stuff Macs are good at is for some specific professional softwares. The rest is overpriced hyped stuff (I'm not saying it's crap because it isn't but it's way too expensive for what it is).

I had the exact same problem as yours with my gf's parents. I didn't spend anything, just removed the admin rights from their session and put the antivirus on autoupdate, problem solved. Also explained them a bunch of easy thing to do/avoid and that's it. With time, they improved and when they bought another system, the first thing they wanted was to make it clean and safe so I guess they learnt.

$61.50 is the cost of a marriage license in California. In Mexico it was 17 pesos.

( Now, does that qualify as SPAM or what ? )

None of the youtube links are working. And I'm computering. So really, it's 50/50 as to whether or not they "fixed" something, or it's a day of the week.

Yeah, there's a bug when using wbw on a iDevice that crashes the browser whenever there is a embedded youtube vid on the page.

So, is there some kind of solar flare, magnetic pole shift, world-wide glitch thing going on right now?

All of a sudden my phone says it's like 6:59am CST when it's only 1:20am CST.
