With valid id you can get a 15% off list discount on any Apple computer. The hilarious irony of this is that the people that buy them are the ones that would be unaffected by the discount. ( Blame some of that on our zip code and the rest on peer pressure....something a marketer never forgets.) Lastly, while no department is exclusive[i], in engineering and math there is a distinct bias toward Windows based machines.
All that said, I think that for 90% of us that the choice has more to do with comfort/familiarity.

The difference is that Apple includes anti virus software within their OS, so there is no need to buy and install a 3rd party app. I've never bought 3rd party anti virus software for any of my macs, and I've never gotten a virus. If I were a PC user and never bought anti virus software in 10 years, I doubt I could make the same claim.
And yes, I will agree that Apple are remarkable at marketing themselves, but they don't really market the fact...when was the last time you saw a commercial for Mac? I'm sure there have been some lately, but all I can remember is the Mac vs PC guys...and that was YEARS ago. They market other products like iphone and ipad A LOT...and by doing so, they hope there is a trickle down effect from people who had good experiences with their iproducts, eventually upgrading to a new Mac. Also...they have major incentives for students...thats why you see a lot on campus.
