'Lots of interesting comments here...but I remember both Kennedy assassinations, the attacks on Ford and Reagan, the implied attempts on Bust 41...Our country has more guns than citizens, and I wouldn't bet on Obama surviving his first term. The Secret Service are good, and I certainly don't want to see a national tragedy happen, which a presidential assassination would certainly be. Not only that, but Obama is near messiah status already with the vast number of lemmings lining up to vote for his Marxist and leftist agenda...the last thing we need is for him to be martyred like MLK. I don't agree with his thinking, especially his "re-distribute the wealth" notions. AND, Biden, for all his gaffs and sheer dumbness, might be as good an insurance policy against assassination as Dan Quayle was for Bush 41. Of course, the nutjob that takes a shot at Obama will probably not care who becomes president if he or she succeeds...their only focus will be to destroy Obama at all costs. They used to use the phrase that the Kennedys 'drew the lightning.' Obama has basked in and encouraged the comparisons between himself and the Kennedys, especially JFK. We are a very divided country, politically and philosophically. The election of Obama will trip a lot of wires in a lot of scrambled minds, and I will not be surprised at attempts not to test him as Biden has suggested (what a twit he is!), but to take him out...race will be part of the motivation...but there are other reasons...look at the polls in an overall sense, and you'll see that for every person who thinks Obama is the answer, there's someone who thinks he would be disastrous for America, and for our future as a nation and a society. In every election, there's about 47% on one side, and about 47% on the other side, sometimes even tighter than that. It's the 4-to-6 percent in the middle that will decide the winner.
I have never been comfortable with Obama's lack of qualifications for the job he seeks, nor with his positions and his irritating habit of dodging every tough issue in favor of chanting "Hope" and "Change." The failure of Bush 43 and the widespread disfavor for him contributes to the willingness to take a chance on Obama. I would not want to see him hurt or killed...he has a family, two young children, etc. But we should recognize how high the passions run in our nationsl politics, and how accessible guns are, and admit that he (Obama) will definitely be a target for more would-be assassins than any president or leader in recent memory.
In my comments, there's no implied wish whatsoever that it will happen, only that, as a student of political history, I think it is quite inevitable under the circumstances. All the protection that can be given him may not succeed against those who are willing to die in the attempt to destroy him. I cannot imagine why he even wants the job, nor why he has already been elected/annointed by the mass media, but that's the reality we have. Kennedy once talked (not long before Dallas) about how simple it would be for a committed individual to assassinate a president. Not that much has changed since 1963. The Secret Service is better and sharper than they were then, but so are the would-be assassins in our society...far sharper and more cunning now than the likes of Lee Harvey Oswald. My vote went to McCain...simply because in my gut I think I can trust him just a little bit more...'Like all elections, this one has come down to the lesser of two evils. Remember, Bush is not on the ticket, and voting for McCain is not asking for four more years of Bush's failed policies. I am a little fearful of what we will be getting in four years of an Obama presidency, and I don't think these are times in which we should, as a nation, gamble in such high stakes. Mr. Obama - or President Obama - will need all the protection he can get, I'm afraid. 'May God Bless and Protect our fragile nation.

No. If we can tolerate 8 years of George Bush, we can handle 4 years of Obama.
Besides, the Secret Service and other agencies are much better at their tasks now, and the type of person that would commit such an act is at an increasingly disadvantageous position due to technique, technology and educational advances within the President's protective communities.
No, he won't be killed. Not because no one wants to, but because the kind of person that would be willing won't have access to the means to do so. It's not like it once was where one person could sneak into a crowd and whip out a pistol at the right moment. Now, when there's a gathering each person's face is scanned as they enter a cordon, run through a database, and responded to if need be whether they know it or not. Locations where the President is going to be are monitored via satellite before the location is even announced to the public, and anyone that goes into the area (perhaps to "case" the place) is monitored while they do so.
Those are two of many, many examples. This is not some cracked up Marine that sneaks into a library and no one sees him. That doesn't happen any more. Could it? On a fluke, certainly. But would it? Not very likely.
I was trained in VIP personal protection when I was in the military. The days of one person deciding to change the world by buying a ticket to the right theater on the right day are long gone. They're... "Ancient history."
The only way a President dies now is either an enormous internal break-down in multiple systems simultaneously, or a pre-coordinated militaristic strike.
bullshit! i was paratrooper at army and had 3 years sniper training. trust me, if he'd be my target, you could say him goodbye.and i am out of army since 13 years.
will he get killed? maybe, depends how much he works together or against arms industry...

The word "hero" has become so grossly overused that it often does not properly reflect actual facts. I wouldn't call a former POW a hero just because he/she was a POW. And OF COURSE I have utmost respect for all members of the military, and OF COURSE I support our troops - and OF COURSE I want them ALL home today. And I wouldn't necessarily call a firefighter a "hero" because they ran into a burning building and rescused someone: that's their JOB, and what they're trained for, and is expected of them. And, no I am not firefighter bashing either - I was a firefighter for 10 years.
On topic: there is always a fringe element that would try and asassinate ANY President, but because Obama is a minority and there is so much racial hatred here, it would not surprise me to see asassination attempt(s). It's unfortunate that these things happen, but the world cannot shut down because of a few radicals who want to rain on our parade.
Fortunately, an asassination plot was just broken up yesterday, consisting of Good Ol' Skinheads. And how do THEY contribute to society?

In response to Snoopy7666.
Has Bush43 failed or been portrayed as a failure? If you look at the numbers it certainly has not been a failure but more of a success given events that have unfolded during his tenor as President. In the last two years with the Congress under Democrat control various bills have been stopped early, not brought to the floor for a vote or the legislation has been so convoluted that voting for it would be disastrous and finally vetoed for the same reasons if passed. And it's amazing on how many times I have seen Democrats tell us a truly bold face lie along with the press in this country when the proof has been released and it was good news. The Bush43 Presidency has been a classic example of "if you tell a lie often enough people will eventually believe it" as the press and some politicians have proven.
Once again, you, the individual must do your own due diligence to understand what is going and what the truth is.
I for one don't want to see Obama killed if he does become President but I do want to see if people will learn from their collective mistake. And yes, "collective" is the key word.

Yeah, that "spread the wealth around" comment was a completely capitalist thought...
He literally took a page from Marx with that comment and hopefully he doesn't mean it. We already spread the wealth around enough.
mrdorkbutt 17 years ago
The "spread the wealth around" was regarding schools, btw. He was talking about even the playing field between the richer and poorer schools.
And being as the top 15% of tax payers pay 55% of the taxes, we already spread the wealth don't we?
Far too much is being made out of that statement. But desperate times I guess......

I don't think so. I listened to the entire hour broadcast from 2001 (really fascinating listening to hear what mulitple Constitutional authorities had to say). He interrupts another of the panel and specifically says that school funding was distributive, not REdistributive. Sounds like he does not believe that "spreading the wealth" includes school funding.

Scary scary times here in the U.S, Obama would be a huge shift toward a Marxist country we don't need. I don't care for anyone who days they want to redistribute the wealth. I would most likely benefit from Obama but my employer would be hurt so then I would be hurt. Someday I want to be in the upper 1%, they already pay 80% how much more does the lower 20% want from them?
daytona1990 17 years ago
Someone commented on the news the other night that word is getting around about how people would have never though that it would come to this. For the U.S. to come this close to having a black president. I personally think that should be the last thing on their mind as the alternative choice is McCain and that is not going to help the American economy. McCain has openly admitted to how much he sides with G.W Bush, which is a whopping 80%.

The spread the wealth around comment was to Joe the plumber regarding taxes. He was explaining why he wants to take Joe's money and give it to other people less fortunate. Watch for yourself.
"I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody." -Karl Marx, wait I mean Barack Obama.

Yes we do spread the wealth already, but we certainly shouldn't make that more drastic. Your point of view is that we tax 40% of the richest people's income, so who cares if we make that 50%? I fucking care.
Let's say Joe Schmo makes $2 million. That's a 10% increase which literally means $200,000. That is a HUGE difference to Joe.
Let's say Jimmy Beam makes $250,000 and he is single. He was divorced twice and pays alimony and child support. All of a sudden that take home of roughly $130,000 is now not even enough for the guy to afford a nice house. You might say, "fuck you Jimmy, I only make X amount." Well guess what, your money has nothing to do with Jimmy's money. Jimmy works hard and he deserves his generous pay. Jimmy may have worked his way through college and graduate school. He may have gotten himself in a situation where he should start seeing some serious cash inflows but instead Obama wants to fuck him in the butt without the common decency to give him a reach-around.
