I think he has more of a chance to be assassinated than the average president, there are a lot of racist hillbillies with nothing to lose, it's truly freaky.

The Secret Service is detaining a man who was planning the assassination of Barack Obama. Allegedly this guy had weapons and military style gear in his hotel and had been heard saying he was going to kill Barack Obama.

That is realy old news. They never charged him with making a threat on Obama's life. They were drug dealers and one of them said the other had made comments about killing Obama at some point without a real threat.

I think if elected, he's going to have more security with him than any other president we have yet to see. I'm sure it'll be like all the government security, plus a few "personal security".

That being said, any smart, committed individual willing to sacrifice his own life would be able to take out a president. When an individual relies so heavily on personal contact with the masses it becomes quite difficult to ensure their safety.

Is this because of the potential for assassination? I don't want to start the debate in here, but McCain is over 70. My wife's father died a few months ago. He was 57. Statistically speaking, there is more of a likelihood that a man over 70 will die tomorrow than a man in his late 40s.

Of course none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.....

I agree, and I think that's the most broken thing in politics right now. Institutions such as Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, Radio Free America and Al Franken... Those things are the single greatest problem in America today. They divide and spread ignorance, selling hate and zealotry in exchange for a buck or two at the expense of humanity.

I'll stop my rant there, but yes. I agree, and I think that's the single most "broken" thing in American politics today. That's why we're not talking about politics any more, and it's why progress is even slower than it was before. Because everyone's rooting for their "team" rather than their nation or their species.

True... I hope you're wrong, too... But I think that, if we have that situation, we would have Biden... Now, I wonder... If Hillary was the VP candidate, would the protect Obama or make him more at risk for those backwoods guys in Alabama? And, let's say, for sake of argument, that we have the same situation on the Republican side... Would that same guy in Alabama take a pot shot at McCain and have Palin in office?
