I read the whole plot thing, and while they did want to kill Obama, there was no real plan to do so other than to drive their cars real fast at him while shooting out the window. I am more worried about their plan to "kill 88 African Americans, including 14 by beheading". This goes beyond a hatred for the idea of a black man in power, and toward a proposed genocide of all blacks they could find.

Has there ever been (I say ever, more like in the last 30 years say) when the American people have been impressed with the candidates on offer? This is a serious question by the way, I'm not having a go at Americans. It just seems to me that whenever there are two candidates for the Presidency (or the British Prime Minister role), no-one is actually happy with either. Obviously McCain's party want McCain, but only because he's not Obama, and vice-versa. It seems to be a matter of voting for the lesser of two evils in most people's mind.

There you go. And the way the two parties stack the deck in their favor in the name of "campaign reform" it will always be that way. I have some ideas on how to fix all of this, but I do not have the energy to put them all down right now. Suffice to say, we need to remove money from the equation completely.

I think Reagan was fairly universally liked. He was, at least to my recollection, the last very widely liked candidate.
To be fair, I was 4 when he was reelected, so I can't really be sure on this.

Yeah. Don't be too sure on that. His job approval ran between 41% and 68%, usually above 50% but it was pretty bad from the politicians side of things as well as some of the media though. Much like 2004, if the Dems had run a really good candidate in 1984 they probably would have won. Reagan was liked by the people, but you would not have been able to tell it from a lot of the coverage he got. Especially after the meeting with Gorbachev where he basically walked out. He got a lot of talk about him dooming us to destruction by the Soviets while letting the poor starve in the streets. God that crap sounds familiar now that I think back.

I disagree that this is the case this election season. Sure, the vocal conservatives who want to instill a fear of "socialism," may make it sound like Obama is unliked, but Obama has excited the American electorate like very few politicians in recent memory. I think that in this case, we have two candidates who are both capable, and John McCain's relative likability and 30+ years of experience is the only reason that Obama is unable to have a runaway victory in this election.
Will he get assassinated? I doubt it. There may be a few hair-brained white-supremacists who will have a go at him, but they won't be successful. Someone earlier had alluded that the US should not elect Obama because of the half-assed assassination attempt uncovered earlier today, but that's an absurd sentiment. We should give in to pressure from an extremist group due to their threats of physical violence? To me, that sounds the same as saying we should give in to terrorists because they bully.
fsujd524 17 years ago
Well this is already proven actually. The FBI actually stopped a 20 and 18 year old guys from their assassination plan to kill Obama. They were white supremacist and were planning on killing and decapitating over 100 black people before they finally got to Barack. Those were only two white supremacists out of god knows how many in our country. Attempts will probably be made again, hopefully they'll all be thwarted in time.

Reagan was universally liked. He only lost 1 state and DC in that '84 election. That was the last real butt-kicking. But, the idea that a better candidate than Dukakis could have given him more of run...I'm too young to know.
That said, Captain Charisma, I just read your post and sent $50 to Obama. So, suck it.
I think of the two, Obama has a better chance as a unifier though. If the polls continue the way the area, this ain't gonna be a close election. I know the polarization still exists in this country, but I think a message of hope has a better chance of bringing folks together than a message of "you don't want a fully Democrat government" and "he is a socialist". There isn't anything to bring folks together there.
If anything I do blame the media on both sides. We have these TV shows and radio shows and blogs whose whole purpose is to fire up their bases. They push nothing but hate and in the 2 years between elections their entire purpose is to keep everyone simmering. Look how heated we get in this forum. This is a fun site, the purpose of which should be tits, ass and jokes (fine....and cars), but here we are screaming back and forth.
We don't listen to each other because our minds are have been made up since 2000. Nothing any of us say is going to change anyone's minds. We are just so pissed off, the only thing this forum provides is an opportunity to let some steam out.
I want more than that. I really do. I want everyone to be friends again. Shit, even through Clinton's first term, we were all still friends. Everyone preaches patriotism and the "real America" and this bullshit, but the process we have right now is really fracturing the nation. Honestly, if either of these men is elected, it won't be as Captain Charisma put it, "the worst thing to happen to this nation." We just survived 8 years of Bush, didn't we? (granted, barely) But the media has us riled up to the point where some of us really believe that, when truth be told, my day to day life isn't too much different now than it was 10 years ago (save for a smaller 401K). And I don't expect it to be too different 3 years from now.
I don't know. Just a rant, I guess. I'm going to go take my dog and have him poop in the yards with the McCain/Palin signs.

The fact that he is black makes a huge difference, especially when you are talking about the southern/southeastern U.S. states. The KKK is alive and well in these areas and a black man being President is not going to go over to well for these racist bastards. I live in Canada and would love to see Obama win the race for President but at the same time I fear for his safety and his family.
There is a reason Colin Powell never ran for president when millions wanted him to. It is probably safe to assume that he and his wife had a discussion and valued his life more than the presidency and an assassination attempt from some nutcase.
I wouldln't even consider voting for McCain if I were an American because of his choice of Sarah Palin for VP is insane. With McCain at age 72 just imagining Palin with the nuclear codes is very frightening.

Yes, because graduating 5th from the bottom in a Naval Academy class of 850, crashing 5 airplanes and getting shot down and captured are sufficient experience and accomplishments to be president of the U.S. McCain can't even define the concept of 'honor.' Some "hero."

Sorry, but Neo-Nazi and NAZI in particular, are not accepted nor associated with Republicans. Go check your history of the NAZI party.
However once the change is realized to be the wrong thing and people start to see the results of not paying attention and doing their own due diligence about the candidates the Secret Service will probably react slowly or just avoid the angry mob altogether. But a living example of poor judgement makes for a good reminder down the road but since those who remember will die off and be replaced by those who didn't live through a disaster then history shall, as always, repeat. Hence, Jimmy Carter. BTW, the worst economy in 50 years was Jimmy Carter.
And soon, again.
