The sign's supposed to say "Danger", but I'm not sure if it was intentionally modified or not... Either way, it caught my eye...

Always looking for the "artistic" picture, no one passes up a sunrise...

This is a Buffalo...
It's what the army uses to investigate and remove IED's and UXO's. (Unexploded Ordnance) Besides being really big, it's built to take a real beating. The arm on the side is used to actually dig up potential threats. Notice how the end is sand color, and the rest is charred? About a week ago, one of the bombs went off while they were checking it out. Needless to say, the arm's components are easily replaced and always on hand. You also can't tell from the angle of the picture, but the underside is "V" shaped, in case of a blast from below. The shape deflects the "majority" of the blast.

For a size reference, look at the large cooler on the back, which is next to a case of 6 1.5 liter water bottles. There's also a ladder on the side...

I bet no one gets to see one of these fly over their heads EVERY DAY...

Of course, they're moving so fast and so low, half the time we don't see them either...

Almost every day, EOD collects and disposes of large numbers of explosives. How do they do this, you ask?

They put them all in a pit and blow them the fuck up!!

The boom is always impressive, and it can be felt miles away... At the time of this picture I was about a mile away. The large buildings behind the explosion make up Baghdad International Airport, which is not small by any standards... That was one detonation of about 6 in a row....

Very cool thread, and would love to see it continue. This stuff is interesting, unlike the canned crap that they put on the daily news. Keep up the great work (both on the thread and on the ground!).

yeah, cool thread.
here's a question: how easy is it to "get it on" with a female soldier when you're out there "killing time?"

Here's one of the soldier's helmets after the 2nd hit that destroyed the humvee pictured before. The soldier was burned, but not too badly. The helmet was melted off of his head from the heat. You can see the melted retention straps, and there's even some melting that went on inside the helmet throughout the padding...

As for the "getting it on" question; I'll be honest. While it is officially known to be against Army regulations for any sexual activity during deployments, where there's a will, there's a way. I've seen it go well and go bad for fellow soldiers in the past. While I was in Kosovo, one guy was crazy enough to actually have sex with a female in his cot with a room full of people present and the lights on. They were in a sleeping bag, but the fact she was riding him didn't hide what was going on real well. Needless to say, he was caught. He also got her pregnant. I'm sure his wife wasn't cool with that.

Many take the chance of getting in a lot of trouble to sate their hormonal thirsts. To answer the question, It's not that difficult.

Of course, I am happily married and would never jeapordize what I have at home by taking the chance. News travels fast; even over seas...

Here's one fresh off the camera, less than four hours old...
I got the luxury of riding in the Buffalo today, while we went to "interrogate" possible IED's. We were lucky enough to not find any, however; The first site we went to had two suspicious bags lying next to the road.

So... Using the arm, the bags were hooked, picked up, and shaken vigorously to reveal....

Two bags full of dead chickens...
