They are both absolutely mechanical in their force-feeding of the rhetoric. I can't watch or listen to either one.

Commentators are paid to comment. It is their job. Actors are paid to stand on the "X" and say their lines, not spout off about their political views. Some entertainers should have taken a lesson from the Dixie Chicks. No matter which side of an issue you take, you're going to piss somebody off.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Raps is as strong as ever, just not in the US. The UK has some of the finest lyricists that have been around for a long time. You've also got holland, france and even spain kicking out some. I even heard some czech rap a year or two back that was spot on.

Just broaden your horizon guys. Forget the commercial crap that comes out of the states now and look to other countries that get no recognition so the artists are still hungry.

Perfect example, a few months ago I was stopped by a guy in the street. Straight away i started to tell him I don't give to charity as its normally just the organised beggers that stop you. He was like no no what music you got on your mp3. After I said rap he was like I'm a rapper who can't get a deal atm and he'd used the stuent loan he got as he was in uni to record two albums, and set up his own label, rather than ust waste it on beer and drugs and what nit. To cut a long story short I bought his cd from him for like 5 quid, and it was amazing. I still listen to it now.

Rap is technically stronger then it's ever been if you count record sales. It's now the most popular music there is but in reality there's nothing real left in it which is why I say it's dead. The only real rappers out there don't get any air time and the ones that do and that are selling all these records are as fake as they come. Rap is not the same as rock music or pop music. I would compare it to grunge back in the day. It has to have authenticity or it's not right and when grunge first came out the bands that played it really lived that bummy misery filled lifestyle then at soon as it went mainstream it was infected by people trying to duplicate it who didn't understand it and it died. Same with hip hop.

I don't listen to commercial rap. 90% of what I play in my car is either old school real hip hop or unsigned artists now that are actually good. As far as "outside the US" rappers go I've never heard a decent one and I've heard quite a few. Rap is as American as apple pie or the Constitution and when taken outside of the American street life it loses authenticity. Rap's not just a form of music it's supposed to be story telling at it's best. Stories of American street life, the stuff that goes on that everyone ignores. I'm not saying that non US rappers don't have their own ghetto's and own stories but they just don't have the same swagger that American rappers do, they've got a totally different flavor that just doesn't coincide well with the flow of the music.

See you're from the UK so I don't really expect you to understand where I'm comin from. I would expect you to like artists from your own country but to make real hip hop I think you have to understand what the American street life is and if you haven't lived it or seen it for yourself you can't really understand it.

Due to the nature of my stupidity and the internet being but a small child years ago I booked a hotel for a month in the run don ghetto part of an americn city. I know exactly what you are saying, the only american stuff i listen to are unsigned artists and proper old school.

Listen to some of the first forms of rap. Rap is poetry set to a beat if done in the correct manner.

Skinnyman for example. You go listen to his debut album council estate of the mind, and then tell me you've never heard good UK rap with a straight face. This man tells it from the heart. Basic but good beats and loops, but not to basic, and words that if they was in book form, he'd be winning a pulitzer. This is a man who beat enimem, when he was good, or at least different, in the world mc battle. Freestyled him of the stage. Unfortunetly, as he keeps getting locked up, his doesn't release enough material as he should, but his new albums out in a few months.
