Glock 27 and 30 are what I carry. .40 is a good round and you can't beat a Glock for reliability.

My father, who had a Texzas concealed carry license, said the main thing in retrospect to consider is weight, because aftrer a day of carrying that thing can get pretty heavy. I'd suggest a slim, small Colt semi. The Springfield XD-9 is one hell of a nice, well designed sub-compact semi that is small, has many safety features (grip safety, for instance), and is reliable and well reviewed in most circles. Have a look at that one. Oh yeah and it's kinda cool looking too. Screw any talk about accuracy. If you get into a situation where you have to shoot someone, they'll be close enough to see the whites of his eyes. You are barely going to need to aim at all under the cirumstances. Some advanced handgun instructors now teach you how to shoot someone while wrestling with them as well as how to keep them from getting your gun and using it against you.

I own two sidearms. 1 is a Ruger 9mm, P89. Great shooting side arm. Although quiet bulky and a little heavy. Unbalanced at that. My second is a snub nose .22 made by Remington.

If this gun is primarily for carrying purposes, then I'd recomend something of the snub nose category. .38 special or or the special edition Ruger 45cal short nose. Never shot one, but heard about it at the local gun swaps.

That's something to think about.

I have a carrying permit here in the US, I keep mine in the truck, jammed between the seat and the console. I don't carry it on me outside the truck, however. It's too big and too bulky to try and tote. I know, my fault for owing such a heavy gun.

I too, like you, are in the process of purchasing a new sidearm. The .38 or .45 really caught my eye. Both are small, convenient, hold about 6 in the clip and are really light on the side and can offer some knock down power if need be.

If that's what you're looking for, check into a .357S&W or a .45Colt or Ruger.

Glocks are over rated and over priced. My gun will fire underwater and in sand too.

Hold on, I'll take a pic of my Ruger.

Man, I depends on what you want. I used to carry a Sig P220, but it's like a boat anchor. I love the way it shoots and feels in my hands, but it is heavy. Same goes for the 1911's. They are heavy and you only get 7 -8 rounds. I have a Sig 225, great for concealing, but again only 8 rounds. So, my primary is the Springfield XD-9. I've put somewhere between 4 and 5 thousand rounds through it, and it's great. The other thing is trigger reset. If you get into combat shooting and do alot of double taps and tripple taps, go with the glock or springfield. The Sigs trigger pull is just too long.

Hmm.... I´m happy to live in a country, where there´s no reason to carry sidearms.....YET!!! So the only "sidearm" i´m packing, is the one i have in my pants..... But be warned! If i do have the right company, i´m firing from the hip.....

um, i like to understand why it is that one might need to carry on there person or keep in the car a weapon. personally, i think it's a scary thing to think that the guy- sane or not- next to me in a restaurant or driving in traffic is carrying, licenced or otherwise!
if you're in law enforcement, ok. but the average joe surely does not need to be carrying weapons. am i wrong in thinking this way?
is the threat to personal safety that high or does it just give an air of confidence/bravado that when and if the shit hits the fan, "FUCK this kung foo shit, i'll just kneecap the sum beach."?

Because criminals carry guns or knives and instead of being a helpless victim you can protect yourself and your property.
