Sanctions will ratchet up this week. Germans business leaders now support tougher sanctions. Russia part in downing the civilian airliner pushed them over the edge. Some thought Putin would stop at Crimea. Just naive thinking as putin has long stated his obsession with putting the soviet union back together. So now we will see russia go into a economic depression just like Iran did

There's a really well documented and reasoned discussion about this in a very serious forum : here.

You all are forgetting that the parallel alien Jesus is involved now, so we gotta square this situation away all over again.

Yeah, I thought about merging this with the demonic Sasquatch alien thread, but if Jesus wants to participate...I dunno.

I didn't see anyway to get to that thread. So I decided to start a new fresh thread since there are new developments in the war. This is a war between Russia and Ukraine. Putin is just using the Separatist to try and hide it's involvement. They are not trying too hard to hide it. Putin has gone the way of most dictators. Putin thinks he is a "daddy" to Russia. Daddy knows what is best for you. Daddy has all the power. The Power has gone to daddys head. But daddy didn't count on his children using his missiles to shoot down a civilian plane. But daddy Putin doesn't care what the world thinks because he can control what his children see and hear. Daddy Putin wants to isolate his children from the world anyway. Dictators love isolation. Easier to control with Isolation. Putin lives like a King either way so what does he care?. Putin tells his children that the west hates us no matter what we do. The west is making stuff up. Soon we will put the USSR back together and that is worth any present suffering. The Russia vs the west is also his way of increasing his popularity despite many Russians living in poverty. The Russian people loved the Status of the once powerful USSR. But I don't think they were focused on that until Putin came along and made it a priority. He stated that a long time ago. Long before he became Dictator in Chief. Now, will Russia's billionaires take him down? Of course poor Russians think there lives will improve. Wealthier Russians see their lives deteriorating . Will they pay the price to put the USSR back together? The West big stick is not military but economics.

One would assume from reading this that you know Mr Putin personally, I mean...you're able to speak for him so eloquently.

I said he wanted all of Ukraine . He is proving me right. What we need to do is move NATO troops into Ukraine. Move a carrier group close by. Europe is just not willing to fight an economic war. Time to stop Putin before he invades other countries

Actually, there's ample cause to believe that if Putin isn't stopped now, the consequences will be quite severe. Historical evidence and the pattern of behavior from Russia is indicative of many of the lessons we supposedly learned in the past.
I do believe there's ample reason to handle this with as much diplomacy as possible. Where that fails, economic penalties should follow, along with political penalties. We should be thoughtful, we should be patient.
But I absolutely believe (and the signs seem to indicate the powers that be feel the same), that this must be Putin's last land grab attempt.
Once (Crimea) is forgiveness.
Twice (the region north of Crimea) is permission.
Three times, is an invitation.

The current situation in Ukraine would be impossible without having massive support for Russian reunification from Ukrainian people. Remember that Russia still has not invaded The Ukraine, and while I agree that some factions of the pro reunification side are being helped by Russian trained or maybe even Russian born militants, they still could not do what they are doing without help from Ukrainian people. The simple fact of the mater is that the Ukrainian people are tired of being poor, led by corrupt leaders, and lied to...and while Putin is about the same, some see it as a way to make their lives less burdensome. Sure there is a possibility that Russia will regain control of The Ukraine, but it won't be so easy in other countries, so I really don't see this as a long term threat.

Hmm he attacks Georgia and now Ukraine. In Ukraine massing troops. Sending weapons in. Most likely Russian agents. USA has evidence Russia fired missiles into Ukraine.
That is easy for you to say a Sugarpie . You're not living next door to Russia. You are not paying attention to what Putin has said in the past. Also no matter what you don't solve corruption in another country by annexing them

Russia isn't that far from Canada. It's even right next to the US too (Alaska).

What I said earlier is still true. Russia has NOT invaded Ukraine, no tanks or troops have crossed the border without being invited. I will admit that some assistance may have snuck into the country to help the pro re-unification factions, but my point is that its not an invasion. If you think otherwise, you're wrong. Also, Russia has NOT annexed the Ukraine, they annexed a region of the Ukraine that wanted to be part of Russia again. Granted it was an illegal vote, and the vote itself was sketchy at best, but still, the majority of the people wanted it.
I'm not saying that Russia isn't a threat, and what they are doing isn't wrong...shooting down passenger planes and amassing an army on your border isn't cool. I'm simply stating that the words you're using are wrong, and by doing so you're implying certain facts, when in reality it simply isn't true.
