About 20% of U.S carbon dioxide emissions comes from the burning of gasoline in internal-combustion engines of cars and light trucks (minivans, sport utility vehicles, pick-up trucks, and jeeps).US Emissions Inventory 2004 Vehicles with poor gas mileage contribute the most to global warming. For example, according to the E.P.A's 2000 Fuel Economy Guide, a new Dodge Durango sports utility vehicle (with a 5.9 liter engine) that gets 12 miles per gallon in the city will emit an estimated 800 pounds of carbon dioxide over a distance of 500 city miles. In other words for each gallon of gas a vehicle consumes, 19.6 pounds of carbon dioxide are emitted into the air. [21] A new Honda Insight that gets 61 miles to the gallon will only emit about 161 pounds of carbon dioxide over the same distance of 500 city miles. Sports utility vehicles were built for rough terrain, off road driving in mountains and deserts. When they are used for city driving, they are so much overkill to the environment. If one has to have a large vehicle for their family, station wagons are an intelligent choice for city driving, especially since their price is about half that of a sports utility. Inasmuch as SUV's have a narrow wheel base in respect to their higher silhouette, they are four times as likely as cars to rollover in an accident. [33]

The United States is the largest consumer of oil, using 20.4 million barrels per day. In his debate with former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, during the 2000 Presidential campaign, Senator Joseph Lieberman said, "If we can get 3 miles more per gallon from our cars, we'll save 1 million barrels of oil a day, which is exactly what the (Arctic National Wildlife) Refuge at its best in Alaska would produce."

If car manufacturers were to increase their fleets' average gas mileage about 3 miles per gallon, this country could save a million barrels of oil every day, while US drivers would save $25 billion in fuel costs annually.

that's all bullshit though. If we cut a million barrels of oil every day our prices would sky rocket because now we're buying a shitload less fuel and anyone who understands supply and demand understands that as long as you are buying in bulk your price will continually go down, if you buy less you pay more.

You pretty much just spit out a sheet about car emissions. I'm not arguing that cars don't pollute, I'm arguing that everything else we do pollutes too so why worry so much about cars when your not talking to your political leaders about shutting down all power plants and shit. We have done way too much destruction to this world by over developing it, it's too late to change that now and anybody who thinks differently is simply gullible. The idea would be to have never built large cities or industrialized nations and continue living off the earth like ever other mammal. We chose not to do that and in turn have destroyed the earth. To say that Americans are ruining the planet because we use the most gas is ludicrous. Every other country has nuclear power plants and does just as much polluting as we do when it comes to every aspect of life outside of cars. It's too late for this planet or this environment and validating driving a small car to save the planet is pure stupidity because nothing has changed since everyone bought small cars and nothing will, we still pollute in every other area of our lives. We still are gonna have big cities and continue to make them bigger, it's not gonna stop until the world implodes so just enjoy your time here and stop buying into propoganda and bullshit.

i wont argue anymore if you cant bring out facts.

a discussion is about facts. not what we have done in the past and what you think will happen in the future. if you cant base your points on facts, they are just bullshit in my eyes.

if you want to go on and pollute the environement we live in, do so. but i want to help keeping a world in that even my grandchildren can live in.

In theory if Europeans would start driving large SUVs you'd consume a shitload more gas which would in turn bring your prices down. So our large SUV's and big engines could possibly be the reason why our gas is so much cheaper then yours.

The market for oil is global and inelastic. Just because we buy more doesn't mean that we pay less. Because it is inelastic, the prices are not subject to demand (think a monopoly, a giant global monopoly). If we stopped buying, the market would shift over to developing countries and/or China because they are industrializing rapidly, and Europe would also absorb some of the oil that we didn't purchase. The prices would stay the same, it just depends on the inputs involved in getting the material (oil) to where its being purchased, and what is required for that material (oil) to be marketable in that given region that affect the price of things such as oil.

No, just no.

And seriously, this thread is annoying. European cars and American cars have different factors and intentions going into their design and manufacturing. I like European cars, they look sleek and elegant, and are designed around the idea of 'constant' maintenance to keep them running smoothly. American cars look rugged and manly, they are designed to go 10 years without seeing a mechanic, and then be discarded. And TOPGEAR, while a neat show is geared towards a European audience.

It is biased, and neither side should be getting so heated about this subject. Seriously now, I should delete half of the replies in this thread because of the jingoism and bickering being displayed.

I mean, hell you guys are talking about cars. If you keep it up, we'll have to get rid of the joke about the existence car section.

This is the most stupid thing I´ve read here since a long time... Maybe you should have a closer look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand

I would not blame America alone for ruining the planet, but they do have the highest energy consumption per person in the world. And even though the US is one on the wealthiest nations in the world they are not even trying to cut it down, even you could afford it... Therefore they can be blamed.

Hopefully America gets it together on making smaller, more nimble cars (come on, who REALLY needs a living-room-on-wheels to commute in, and how often do you REALLY need an SUV ?)...

Some nice US autos, in terms of electric supercars:

Of course, these are NOT Big 3 cars. The Big 3 are awful, awful companies.

Look the whole premise of this is rediculous. Americans on average can't drive. They recieve no driver training and everyone gets a drivers licence. So because of that they drive slow and causiously because you really never know what the other driver is going to do. Thus the cars they sell are disposable. They are not desiged to last forever because the stupid driver will just hit something anyway. Also those people in America who do enjoy driving and are good at it just use the supirior economy and import the best of the rest of the world so they drive European or Japanese or whatever they want. As for SUV's and trucks it is a fasion statement not a practicality thing. All they are for is to say look what I bought.

This argument is bunk. Yes, european cars are better cars for europe. There is absolutly no backcountry or wildlands in europe where as the majority of land in the U.S. is still untouched. There are more (miles or kilometers) of dirt roads in the U.S. than paved. There are area's in the U.S. that you need to haul extra fuel or your screwed. Europes roads are perfect. and even in northern scandanavia, your never to far from something. crazy discussion. The cars here (in the u.s.) suffer from a higher degree of changing weather and conditions than in europe (europe has a fairly stable climate EVERYWHERE) Even if there wern't a bunch of idiots driving in america (and there are a bunch of them) there is a need for SUV's... it's just that any idiot can get one and drive it in the city. If you live in the city, what do you need an suv for?

I would not buy a european car and drive it in most of the united states. If you do that, your a fool!
but I certainly would buy a european car in europe. It's highly tuned cars for good roads vs. cars that can withstand huge environmental changes.

one example... the BMW and the Chevy that were flooded in New Orleans are now worth the same. We have floods, tornadoes, deserts that go from 45 C durning the day to -10 C at night, snowstorms, earthquakes, huge forest fires... we have all four seasons in alot of the country (this is more dramatic here)

So the argument is bunk.

I agree. My family has bought American cars my whole life. My first was a Chevy truck. But 2 years ago I bought a BMW because it was (and still is) the best handling car I've ever driven. Can any American car match the capabilities of mine? Not without spending at least twice as much. I absolutely love my car and my love for driving means that I will most likely own a BMW for the rest of my life. However, it is true that the only reason American cars are crap are because they are designed to last app. 7 years before everything starts breaking down and you're forced to buy a new one because its the best way for American companies to make money. Thats what this all boils down too. is that we are interested in only making money and it doesnt matter what kind of product other people get as lng as someone gets there cash.

It is true that the american cars are "throwaway"
I know that the majority of "older" cars in America are retstored classics, or ones that have been barned for life, except the Vw Beetle, which i guess last forever!
Yes i know the majority in the us were built in Mexico, but the majority of European imports i bet are still on the road in some shape or form.

this is by far the dumbest thing i have ever read, how can you say americans on average cant drive? what the hell are you basing this off of? i dont give a two flying shits what your driving it was designed to break, how else do you think manufacturers make so much money? and trucks are a fashion statement? you know maybe some people in the western part of the world actually need vehicles that have a little something called torque with lots of room and can actually pull stuff without throwing a transmission...basically nothing any european pile of crap can deliver

i think he was going on the fact that most states require a half assed test and only some require road tests and that most states you get your license at age 16 after less than a dozen hrs of class behind the wheel of a car... germany i think you can get your license at 18 and after much more training
