Alright. First and foremost this is obviously a spoof account - and I'm not using my main account for reasons I really don't want to get into right now, so you'll have to bear with me.
I'm far from an expert on how to run a forum - but there are a few things that I do know are killing WBW as far as being a community - so take my advice or not.. Its up to the people that matter to decide.
For those that don't know me, or don't give a shit - a little background: I run a forum myself, and have for a long, long time. Years, in fact. My current forum isnt as old as some that I've run in the past - and is constantly growing everyday. I have one of the most loyal user bases to the forum that you'll ever find - and both I and they know the reasons for that. Though my forum has a very, very small fraction of the number of members this site deals with every day - most days (specifically the last few weeks in a row) our forum activity has been many times higher than WBW's non-porn based community sections. Like I said, there are many reasons for this - and I'll give you the ones I know - I guess listed from what I deem most important to least.
1. Diz - buddy, I think you are a great dude.. But the "wizard behind the curtain" bullshit plays out very fast, and you've not only lost touch with your community - but have made it obvious you don't care about the people populating your online habitat that you've created. Moreso with money involved - this is a huge no-no. I understand from what you and your crew have said that you are better with code than with people. Alright, thats fine - but there is no reason you cant take 10 minutes out of your busy coding day to hit up a few threads in the recent posts menu and post a few times every 24 hours. The people paying your wages are well aware that you don't give a shit about the community portion of your site - and this is not going to fly forever. I've been a sponsor for a long time (with my main account), and its hard for me to admit sometimes that I'm contributing to a forum where the owner not only has a staff of a dozen invisible "coders" (that we have yet to see any production from) but the owner himself is too busy to stop by once every few days to post something in a thread.
Do you have any idea how good it makes people feel when the owner of a site this big not only notices their thread, but takes the time to post in it? Thats huge, dude. Stop hiding and acting like you have no idea whats going on. And if you don't - try getting to know your community again. You've lost touch, dude. And the only place to go from here is down.
2. Diz - Clean up your relationship with your crew. These people are the most important members of your site. Without them, this forum is nothing - no matter how much money you throw at it. They need to know that they matter, and they need to be told regularly, like it or not. No one wants to work for nothing for someone that doesnt appreciate them. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but the overall impression that I get is "Diz has a bunch of faceless dutchies getting paid mucho dinero to go on vacations, while no one even talks to him that works for free." Truth hurts, my friend. These people can make or break you.
I do have to take a second to thank and applaud fefe for cleaning up the crew in general. You got rid of the power tripping fuckheads that ruined the community for alot of us - and had you not done this and balanced out the crew with good people.. that would have been my next point.
3. Create. You always have to be creating. Create, create, create. If nothing is happening - MAKE something happen. If you are diz or a crew member and nothing is going on, make something happen. Start a contest for a small prize... Create a crew spoof that turns every subforum into something crazy for a few hours, then change it back. Make people feel like they are missing something if they dont come back regularly. But most of all - stop things from becoming stale. As a community creator - your mind always has to be going on to the next idea. Its alot of creative work to keep a community fresh. Sit down for an hour once a month and write down a few contest or topic ideas, and pass them out to your crew along with what you need them to do. I'm sure they'll get it done, and be happy to have been asked by you to accomplish it. This goes back to the man behind the curtain bullshit, I suppose.
New stuff has to be happening semi-regularly, and im not talking about "Versions" of the site. Concentrate on revitalizing your community and stop worrying about adding sparkles to it. (No offense, sparkles)
Stuff like letting fefe add new emoticons (small stuff, but new stuff) goes a long way. People have been having alot of fun with those, and they have nothing to do with anything but a small addition to the site. Things like that.
4. The community is dead. Thats the cold, hard truth. The old community structure that I loved (people respected demigods, old timers were listened to and things like that - people strived to become a demigod) is kaput, and that has to be rebuilt. This is the toughest thing to do - and to keep contributing members around - they have to know that they matter.
A few suggestions would be to have the crew focus on threads that are made that arent "name your dick" threads (I.E. quality threads) and through their serious and contributing posting - expand those threads out a few pages and let the contributer know that they posted a quality thread. People want to know that their shot into the dark creatively is appreciated and something they should try again. Dunno if this suggestion makes sense, but I know what i'm trying to get across.
If someone makes a shit thread (anything by "mal", for example) - they should be told why its shit and how they could improve next time along with the usual flaming (hey, flaming is needed, trust me) Mal's latest thread is a great example of how this can work. I was happy to see you guys pound him into oblivion, to be honest. Between he and Robodick, you get buried in bullshit.
Figure out how to make people feel that this is "their" internet home again, and you'll be on your way to rebuilding the community that brought most of us here anyway.
5. I would post something here about the members who try to be the "OMG NUMBER 1 FORUM PIMP LOOK AT MY POINTS" but for some reason certain crew members actually see these repost spewing dipshits as "needed contributers" while people that bring quality posts to the forum do not receive the same "mod protection" from trolls and the like. Whatever shall be, shall be I suppose.
Anyway, sorry for jeffing out there. For those of you that read and take to heart what I said - thank you. For those of you who think I have no idea what I'm talking about - there is a reason you are the one surfing a forum, and people like me are the ones running them
Good luck, WBW. It would be a shame to see you keep sliding down the hill to complete porn posting without a community.
