Yep. The left is authoritarian in the name of protecting the public and the right in the name of safety from outside threats. Both do it on "fairness" claims.
Exactly why the Second Amendment was written. The people should never fear their government, the government should always fear the people.
Unfortunately, that isn't the case.
Nowadays, the public serves the public servants,
while they enrich themselves.
Rebellion is the only alternative.
Not disagreeing, just that I think the whole mess is more skewed left than right.
Woot, Budokan, jsn, and Highguy welcome to the club of far down in the negatives.
Anyways, I think the issue with the right/left spectrum here is that pretty much every US politician lets the free market decide where things are going and that it the true delineation between right & left, whether the market is controlled. While many Democrats want a more socialized system of health care, education, etc. they still are willing to let businesses run fairly rampant.
Take for example the United States chemical industry. There has been no mandatory government testing of new (or old) chemicals since the 60s or 70s in the US. Today there are around 100,000 untested chemicals used everyday in American homes and work places. I fall far to the left, not because I think the government should take everyone's money and spread it out, but, rather I fall far to left because I think businesses need to be more controlled by the government (primarily big business). The free market will tend to drive the cheapest and easiest solution forward, rather than forcing companies to explore new avenues.
Take for example the automotive industry. Internal combustion engines are incredibly energy inefficient, hence why they run so hot. Two gentlemen, one from Australia and one from Italy, are in the process of developing engines that run off of compressed air. One major advantage of this: the compressed air also acts a lubricant, there is almost NO friction in the system. The compressed air engines run cool enough that you can put your hand against it while they operate. Now big automotive companies don't have an incentive to develop such engines, because they have no incentive to as current engines are easily produced, cheap, and work in the market (no new added R&D costs). Congressman Kucinich runs far to the left because he really, really wants to regulate business. Clinton and Obama do not want to regulate business as much as they want to socialize some very specific areas of the US system. Anyways, that's my 2 cents on why they wind up to the right on this spectrum.
Let's have Obama and Clinton run our lives for us. We'll never have to think again, do for or improve ourselves. All our wants and needs will be fulfilled. Just become the drones that survive the day.
Than again, let's beat the rush and all move to Castro's Cuba!
Just remember this, some will promise you the solution years down the road and when it doesn't happen the next solution will be years down the road but right now you need to deal with hard times and vote for a "change, hope and promises" that never seem to happen nor realized unless you do it for yourself.
In 1995 Bill Clinton VETOED the drilling of ANWR saying that it would take 10 years before the oil is delivered. Thirteen years later we could really use that oil to deal with hard times.
Do the research to find out who is really screwing you while you grab your ankles. It's simpel really, find out how who voted for what and when and learn the reality that most of the media will not tel you. Be responsible for your own knowledge. The Library of Congress must be accurate in recording votes and that's where you can learn the truth without opinions clouding your mind.
My bumper sticker: Screwed '08 The only choice we can make this time around is the speed of the screwing we'll get!
lefty, we should make a "green section" club :P
To almost every question I answered either "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree".
Although i dont like test like this (multiple choice, hipotetic scenarios that leads to ambigous answers), many of the questions were so right winded, that I had to "put my feet down" (just quoting Chandlers from friends :P) and disagree STRONGLY.
Companies should never be allowed to hurt the general population in order to make profit for a very small amount of people. Whoever thinks otherwise either belongs to that small percentage or is completely obnubilated by promises made by a system that seduces them and at the same time, struggles to keep them out of the "elite" club.
Ever heard of the "Status quo"? People with power dont want you things to change (automotive industry example you presented) cause it would, eventually undermine their own power.
So, for all of you who dream about becoming part of the higher classes, being able to buy more and more ipods and faster cars, sorry but your dream will always be unfullfilled since once you fullfill a part of it, you would automatically become new target for a more capable mp3 player, a fancier cellphone or a flashier car.
No matter what you "reach", someone will always come up with something else to seduce you with and guess what, you will buy it (how many ipods did you already had? how many cellphones in the last 3 years?)
not a rant... just thoughts

i keep wondering why i'm so on the center between authoritarian and libertarian,
