OR, I understand your point, I know that having your work appreciated gives you a great feeling, but I think that you are exaggerating a bit.
Would you like to get 100 pm with "thanks" or "nice girl" for every pic you upload? I wouldn't. Even 10 is good, since you know, that others like it too (and almost every thread I comment gets 10 "thank you" posts).
The next thing is about being mad at people who don't comment. Do you think that a paying member who isn't commenting is worse than a member, who uploads? Or do you think, that an uploading member should also comment everythin, because if not then he's just a damn noob and leecher? I know, that there are members, who don't pay, comment nor upload, just stay and lurk, but you won't change it by being mad, the only thing you can get is sickness. And it's not worth it. Some of those lurkers will change sooner or later, just as I did. Just give them time. And for the rest - enjoy your stay.

I know myself it can be very scary to post any replies or anything good or bad but that is like that if you enter into any new community on or offline

It's easier with comments, because only the author will read it (the rest is there for pics mainly) and he'll like everything which is nice.

This might be a reference to something I wrote. I know that I usually don't post "Thanks" or "Me too" messages; this isn't because I don't appreciate the efforts of the people posting - it's just what I'm used to because I come from a mailing list background (I've been administering mailing lists for the best part of 15 years now) and on mailing lists it's generally considered bad etiquette to do "me too" posts... I have to say, too, that on the forum here I can find it pretty tedious wading through endless two-word posts that take up half the screen because of their avatars.

I prefer to show my appreciation by rating pictures: now, maybe I'm being naive in thinking that actually matters - if the consensus is that every time someone posts some pictures, there should be hundreds of "thank you" posts, then I guess I can be a sheep and follow along; but I'd really prefer not to add to the clutter on the threads - by only posting when I actually have something I think offers more than basic phatic communication.

There are too many mixed messages on WBW: on the one hand, you get threads like this where people are asking for more posts, then there are other threads where n00bs get their heads shot off any time they poke them above the trench. I'm coming around to the point of view that the level system (newbie--demigod) is actually a bad thing, because it creates a totally vacuous sense of elitism, and encourages types of behaviour that are essentially counter-productive.

The system is not bad
it´s the users

I haven't been posting pics myself for a while, not because of the lack of feedback, but because my time is limited. Yet, I think in a thread with 200000000 viewers should be more than 5 responses saying "thank you for posting."

Just my 0.016€ (roughly equal to $0.02 ).

The newbie-demigod system is a kind of appreciation for contributing members and a clue for newbies who to ask for help. Or at least should be, like robin said - it's people who make mistakes, not the system.
