So far, Kanzen seems to be making the most sense of this all. I own a crap load of systems, myself, from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360, so right off the bat I want to say that I am by no means a fanboy of any system.
As far as choosing a system now, I would say the 360. Mainly because I am weary of first generation consoles released by Sony. Both the PS2 and PS have had their share of problems with their first batch. Give it some time (and hopefully a price drop) before thinking about that one. Let the early adopters work out the kinks.
As far as game selection goes, Sony has always had good support with Japanese companies (like Namco, Capcom, Square, Konami, etc), while Microsoft has better support with American companies (Epic, Ubisoft; although they produce on both platforms; Vivendi Studios).Think about what type of games you like, and in the future you may see what you like best, if you're fine with waiting.
Don't think 360 games are interesting? I think otherwise. Gears of War was just released, and is phenomenal (I'm hooked on it). Check it out at gamespot.com, ign.com, or 1up.com to see why. Dead Rising is another great one. Alone in The Dark looks pretty awesome, too. Don't get me wrong, PS3 has some great ones coming out, too, like MGS 4 and Virtua Fighter 5. I just want to point out that 360 is no slouch when it comes to its game library.
The Wii is another alternative. It is a totally new way of looking at gaming. I'm really looking forward to it. New Zelda, anyone?
On a side note, a shout out to Kanzen...your user pic, is that K' from King of Fighters as a girl? Just curious, it kind of looks like that but with Guilty Gear art....if that makes any sense...or I'm just insane.
