yeah, we need some more competition here... but that question is in no way easier for germans (since its just something to guess, no strictly historical fact).

Fafnir is a dragon of olden Germanic mythology with a great treasure hoard. I'm going with him.

Dude, think about how pimp a pet dragon would be? If you get mad ass walking a collie in the park, I can't even imagine how much play you'd get with a fucking dragon.

thats good, but since this is a history quizz, lets not stick to mythology. which historical event might have been the root of that dragon story?

(like i said, this question is more about a good but unproven theory than about facts. get creative and think it over)

A Venediger was the German word for a supernatural being (sometimes called dragons) and could be a dwarf or goblin with a love for crystals and rare minerals.

hmmm... what if you try to think of something that looks like a dragon or better like a a sparkling snake that wriggles through the deep woods, carrying a treasure of metal (doesnt have to be gold or silver, any kind of metal was very valuable for the germanic tribes, since it was rare in the area they controlled)...

He's obviously looking for a caravan, I'm guessing Roman, that was attacked and the material goods stolen, in this case metals. Think Robin Hood if you need a visual. I just can't figure out who, or when.

Without some kind of further hint I've got nothing. I've tried every resource I can think of and I'm lost.

i appreciate the effort, and since you were really close, i´ll tell ya:
i was thinking about the roman army that was send to germania with varus. they got completely smashed up in the "varus battle" in the year 9 (by arminius and the germanic tribe of the cheruskers). the battle probably took place near osnabrück (its not 100% sure yet) and marked the end of roman advances to conquer germania east of the river rhein. new historical theories assume a connection between the tradition of that battle and the emergence of mythological sagas like the "nibelungen" saga.

this is all way too easy. Considering we're all ont he internet right now, just type your question into a search engine and bingo. I don't know what the hell you mean by carpet though, the last great battle I've seen take place on carpet was when my dog pissed on it and I whooped her ass.

ok, i will sort things out clearly: it was a battle. it took place. and it is on a carpet/tapestry.
[/reply]

No wonder I didn't get it. If you said "tapestry" I would have got it straight away, Its Not a fucking carpet is it??

i´m sorry dude...in german "carpet" and "tapestry" mean the same, so i thought you would be able to get the connection... if had used tapestry it would have been too easy, cuz everyone knows the bayuex tapestry or could have just googled it...
are tapestry and carpet really totally different terms in english?

Carpet is a floor covering, a tapestry is a wall hanging, normally for decoration. Now let me take a look at this new question

:Edit:: There isn't a question yet. Mikro answered it himself
