Lol....I just noticed that he said he needs 5lbs of weight. There is no way he only needs 5lbs. If you've ever dived before...especially in that cold of water, with those thick of way that 5 lbs would keep you on the bottom. You'd need more like 40 lbs I'm thinking.

Bering Sea Gold, Gold Rush, Jungle Gold Rush, Diamond Divers.... I tend to enjoy these shows about people trying to strike it big by taking huge risks.

As a diver, you should appreciate this. I once dove with a college running back with less than 4% body fat (certified in a submersion test). 5'10", 215# of solid muscle & bone. If he jumped in a pool, he went straight to the bottom. With a 1/4" full body wet suit he was barely neutrally buoyant above 20'. Any deeper and he sank like a rock. It was hard to believe.

Yeah....the two big balls of fat on my chest stop me from sinking. With a 2mm shorty suit in salt water I still need about 10lbs of weight. I'm not sure what thickness of suit they are using on the show, but my guess is that 7 or 8 mm, and probably used in layers of 2 around the core. You could be made of solid stone and 5lbs isn't gonna hold you on the bottom. But yeah my dive instructor was like your friend, he didn't use any weights in the pool. Crazy.

Also, I don't know why someone would be buoyant in the first 20 feet of water and then sink below that? The density of the water vs. the density of the object in it is what determines buoyancy, so I'm not sure why going more than 20 ft. would change either. In fact, I think it might change at depth, but in the other direction. You would gain more buoyancy at deeper depths because the density of the water is slightly greater under a lot of pressure?

I'm not a diver, so I don't know, but this is all just based on my understanding of the physics of buoyancy.

Also, I like the word buoyancy. Spelling it is fun.

As you dive deeper the weight of the water compresses things like your wetsuit and the air in BCD (buoyancy control device) and makes them less buoyant. So yeah...the deeper you go, the more you sink. Same reason why the deeper you dive, the more air you use....your lungs are compressed, the air (once it leaves the tank) is compressed and less effective.

Ok, that sounds about right.

Density = Mass/Volume, so, if you lower the volume of a thing by compressing it, while keeping the mass the same, it's density will increase, which will lower it's buoyancy. Makes sense that way.
