Blaming rap music for shit that happens is just as bad as the crazy parents in the 80's & 90's blaming metal for their kids commiting suicide or blaming Marilyn Manson for school shootings.

only one comment: why are we always trying to blame music, games, tv, etc.? Why not put the blame where it truly belongs...PARENTS. The problem is at home. There has always been questionable music and viewing material, but as long as the "right values" are instilled at home, kids should turn out alright. I'm black and was a teen through the "gangsta rap" rise--NWA, Cube, EZ-E. I listened to all of it, but never once tried to emulate what I saw. Why? Cause I knew my mom would kick my ass, that's why. I was more concerned about respecting her than trying to be something I was not.

So fix the problems at home and the other problems would take care of themselves. Oh but they can't regulate what goes on in the home--so they just blame everything else and go around censoring what I watch, play, listen to, and read~All for the sake of the children. I'm tired of this passing the blame around bullshit.

I don't blame rap directly. I blame the parents of kids that grow up to do bad things, and of course the kids themselves. However, this type of music does not help the situation when our youth listens to it. So called "gansta rap" does influence them in that it glorifies a certain lifestyle. If you are a mature adult and enjoy rap, or listen to rap for your own intellectual purposes than fine. Go for it. But any music about shooting people, pimping hoes, killing cops, beating people down, worshiping satan, is completely inappropriate for a child, period (rap, metal, whatever). Yes I live in the US and you have a right to listen to whatever you want, but parents need to do a better job to step in and filter our children from bad influences. Most children that listen to this stuff do not go on to college, get a degree, and get a high paying job. Rather they don't do well in school, or they drop out, and put themselves on a path where they don't achieve what they are really capable of.

Yes, yes, I know there are exceptions, but most kids that listen to rap and metal don't have the most financially productive lives, nor the socially pleasant lives. I work with and meet all types of people, this is just what I have seen with my own 2 eyes.

And shame on corporations that market this stuff to kids. There is such a thing as too much freedom in a democracy, and I think many countries need to think about this.

I vote a 5 on this topic. I suspect half the people in this thread agree, the other half disagree. This topic is borderline political, I hope nobody crosses the line so it does not get locked. I wish we would have a political forum here at WBW. It would have to be closely monitored, but I love politics.

My 2 cents...

I have the same opinion here. Like I said before, its not the music in general that causes things to happen. Rap does nothing more than put the idea into peoples heads. But we cant say, that because something puts a bad idea into a persons head were going to ban it; there are too many other forms of entertainment that have the same effect.

I think this point is only more strongly instilled by bouray's post.

Just like bouray said, its very difficult to regulate what kids listen to. I think if a child were to listen to rap, but was raised with the right values, they would turn out right, but if a child were to listen to rap, and had no values what so ever, then they would fall into the category spoken of throughout this topic.

Actually, both yours and his lasts posts were removed. I left the ones before those because I didnt deem them to be overly political.

In all honesty, they were both very good posts, and I found them interesting to read, but since we can allow politics, they had to go. Just remember, I dont make the rules(especially that one), I just enforce them.

i dont wish to sound racist but the rise in crime seems to me to be linked with rap and an influx of migrants. I find that when you watch the news and there is a young teenager killed it is generally black on black which is a shame as it puts out the signal that they are violent people.

on top of that you have the negative stereo typing of islam which is now starting to really bubble under and cause alot of bad feeling within the country , these issues are not being resolved but are instead trying to be covered over by the media trying to insist that this is a multi cultural society (which it is) but then in the next breath having storys of muslims complaining about christmas being shoved down there throats. this then starts to piss of the younger culture who then feel that they have to fight for there own idenity i.e. blacks with rap and yardies, pakistan with hasbula and muslims with osama bin laden. until there is a recognition that this country has as a majority a christian society that embraces other cultures , and other cultures accept that this is a christian society the problem of violance is only going to esulate, with the goverment being the only winner putting up more cameras on the streets demanding dna insisting on id cards untill eventually the goverment officially and police controll everything in our lives or as enock powell said "the streets will run red with blood".

I read it and replied. My only comment on it since neither was allowed is that we will have to agree to disagree. We have a different outlook on the issue and I believe both of us have valid points.

is rap to be blamed. mmm, NO. "they" just glamorised the "thug life" and profited from it. if you want to put the blame on somebody put it to those that buy the music and then emulate what they see/hear. it's unfortunate that some can't differentiate between reality and fantasy. i have a good chuckle everytime i see some wannabe homie/wigga on the street with all their bling trying to be something they are not!

I don't think rap has much of an influence over 95% of people. However, I believe a small percentage of people are willing to buy into almost anything that reaches them, completely. And that could be a very bad thing if what they were buying into was negative and harmful to other people, or themselves.

And by no means do I think that rap is negative, there are plenty of negative things in every genre across the board, death metal comes to mind, which I am a huge fan of.

Thats exactly how I feel about the subject along with blaming games and movies for something stupid someone does. What it all boils down to is how they were brought up and what the parents allow them to be around, watch, or listen to. I was born in 1980, I've been listening to rap since the age of 10, along with other types of music such as country, rock, and metal. I'm white, I went to a school that was mostly black (I was the only white person in all of my classes, in every grade), once I got to be the age my parents would let me go out by myself which was around 15 years old, I hung out with different types of people some were even in gangs. Not once have I acted like any of the people I hung out with, saw on tv, listened to on the radio, or acted out something I played on a video game. I get so pissed off about people trying to blame something or someone else for their own mistakes. If the people had of been better parents, mentors for the kids then everything would be better than what it is now.

i think militarism causes more violence in america. if we have to blame music industry and violentic artist/lyrics then why do we have to blame only rap. how about heavy music or rock music?

How naive can a person be??? How small-minded.... I can only completely agree with you, JonM.

Schweet, let me think?
METAL is your favorite music?
Oh, and YOU LOVE METAL, so it has to have NO negative influences on anyone, right?
Oh, and let me think?
YOU DON'T LIKE RAP music at all, right?
So rap HAS TO BE the reason for EVERYTHING bad in the world, huh?

I don't know what's going on with me... until your GREAT post I thought people get STD's from having sex without protection.... I must be wrong.

Now I'm confused.

That may be caused by the AIDS I got since I first heard Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" on the radio when I was a child... why in the hell didn't I put a rubber on the radio??? That could have prevented me from ALL diseases I have.

Oh, and yeah, wasn't it the same year the VERY FIRST criminal action known to manhood happened and the very first rap song was released?

I'm sorry for not being able to discuss any longer from now on, but I have to leave, I'm feeling the urgent need of raping a woman after just having listened to Immortal Technique. Fucking rap music makes me wanna fuck every girl I want to... who cares if the girl agrees, right??? I listen to RAP, I DON'T NEED no GIRLS to AGREE, RIGHT??? Oh, I need to correct: I listen to rap, so I don't need no BITCH to AGREE, RIGHT?!?!

I will also tell you tomorrow if the children and women I'm going to take as human shields this evening when robbing a bank will have been able to prevent me from all the police gunfire. I hope so.

Fucking rap music...!

But who cares about all that.

I got AIDS.

---> get away from your clichés and start thinking, man.

(I'm very sorry for a small amount of SARCASM you may find in this post!)
