People Becoming Less Likely to Classify Themselves as Overweight

We test for differences across the two most recent NHANES survey periods (1988–1994 and 1999– 2004) in self-perception of weight status. We find that the probability of self-classifying as overweight is significantly lower on average in the more recent survey, for both men and women, controlling for objective weight status and other factors. … The shifts in self-classification are not explained by differences between surveys in body fatness or waist circumference, nor by shifting demographics. We interpret the findings as evidence of a generational shift in social norms related to body weight, and propose various mechanisms to explain such a shift, including: (1) higher average adult BMI and adult obesity rates in the later survey cohort, (2) higher childhood obesity rates in the later survey cohort, and (3) public education campaigns promoting healthy body image.

Burke and Heiland (2007) argue that mean BMI in the population determines the social norm for body weight, and assume that individuals assess their own weight in relation to the social norm. The observed decline between the NHANES surveys in the tendency to self-classify as overweight, which occurred during a period that also saw an increase in aggregate mean BMI, agrees with the central prediction of this framework. In addition, we find that members of groups (defined by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and birth cohort) with higher average BMI (or higher obesity prevalence) are less likely to classify as overweight than members of groups with lower mean BMI (or lower obesity rate), controlling for own BMI and other factors, where this relationship helps to account for the between-survey decline in the tendency to feel overweight. We also find that exposure to a higher childhood obesity rate may reduce the tendency to feel overweight in adulthood and that this relationship, too, may explain some of the reduced tendency to feel overweight in the more recent survey period.

So, basically, fat people don't think they're fat anymore. Which, I suppose is good for bulimia and anorexia, but not so good for everyone else.

Eric's afraid a fat person is gonna sit on him.

And a fat person just might....

I have several obese (not just overweight) friends around the country that will agree with this article completely. Most of them have no idea how much they weigh because the average scale only goes to 300 lbs. Since most of their peer groups are equally obese, they don't see themselves as that different from societal norms. One more example of how our society has its' collective head buried so far in the sand. Who will take care of these people as they age? There sicknesses will overwhelm our already overburdened health care system. And 95% of it is completely preventable.

Many comedians say this, but Dennis Leary comes to mind (paraphrasing): The day I wake up and can't see my dick, I stop eating.

I'm sorry fat people don't know when to stop eating, despite the horrible condition they are in which their doctors tell them about repeatedly. But not sorry enough to give my tax dollars to it. Put the damn cheeseburger down.

That being said, I'm glad I'm not fat. It means I can eat pizza without crying.

I've noticed this lately too. It seems like people who would have been called "fat" 10 years ago are now in the normal category... and people who would have been normal weight 10 years ago are now "skinny"

I work in a hospital and it would be interesting to sit by the main door for an hour or two and tally every single person you saw come in the door and classify them as:

Thin
Normal
Obese
Morbidly Obese

The last two would definitely be an overwhelming majority!

... Now I'm working out double tonight!!

BMI is a terrible way to measure people. Put it to you this way. You can work out and eat right like hell and wind up with a higher BMI than you started with. Why? Muscle weighs more than fat. BMI takes your weight and height and figures out a ratio. A 6 foot tall guy with a very muscular physique could easily weigh 225 and be considered in great shape with little body fat. But according to BMI he would be Obese. But if he weighed 137 he would be on the low end of normal. Anything over 183 is overweight for someone 6 ft tall. Not saying that we don't have a lot of lard-asses around, just that using BMI is a terrible method (The Rock in his prime was obese according to BMI).

Another thing we have to remember is that the government lowered the BMI thresholds in 1998, doubling the number of people considered overweight immediately.

The government is pretty funny that way. If the statistics don't fit, change the statistics.

Wait, I just actually read that. Doubling? Are you joking? Because, let's be honest, the people in America are pretty gross. I would figure the statistics to be otherwise, looking at them.

I keep writing responses to this, but they keep trailing off into how much fat women who dress skanky piss me the fuck off.

I was talking to a friend of my the other day (a dude)...and he was talking about how he didn't want to own a scale, because he obsessed over his weight. He's now clearly overweight, but he was talking as if it was a disorder he had that he got over, and that now he was normal and healthy. Whereas he was at least 50lbs overweight...and living in a man-tittied fantasy land.

I watch my weight fairly often, because I think it's important to stay fit. Also, women like guys who have teh fitness.

But it's very clear that overweight people are becoming the normality, and they seem to have this fucking attitude about it too, like people who watch what they eat, and exercise are a bunch of freaks or something. Unless you're physically unable to work out, there is no fucking excuse for being fat. But all fatties have are excuses...about how it's everyones fault but theirs. McDonalds made me fat, I have a slow metabolism, I have a thyroid condition...etc etc

Translation: I eat shit and I'm lazy.

Fucking fat people, srsly.

Honda, you and I are on the same page completely. If you feel bad about your weight, then eat carrots and run a bit. Otherwise, don't bitch to me about it.

That being said, remember that push-up site you showed here? 100 pushups is fucking hard.

Fuck man, I thought everyone had lost interest except me.

I'm still not there yet...but I'm working at it.

I agree, it's a lot harder than I initially assumed.

I can get at around 60 and then it gets so fucking difficult i feel like my arms are going to both simultaneously explode and cave in. It's tough.

Don't worry, though. I'm keeping the dream alive.

Man, now I'm worried if 60 is enough. I better get on that. What was the website again? A thread should be started about it.

You've got to be at that point now where it feels attainable though right? Like it's just a short matter of time?

I hope so, it's a good feeling..

I don't want to derail this thread...but let me know how its going in the spam thread from time to time.

Edit: http://hundredpushups.com/

You should start the thread man...

Will do... attainable maybe. Have you reached 100? Becuase if you have, I think I have to call you an asshole. But, we'll end this here...

Fat people are lazy gluttons by definition, and if you are fat then get a grip, go on a diet, and walk or run around where you live. After a few weeks, you'll feel better, the people looking at you will feel better, and you'll notice a difference in the girls you sleep with (even if they are your wife) because they'll enjoy it more. You live longer, have more sex and fun, and can play other basketball games besides horse. What's to lose?

This is great...we're slowly moving towards the world that Wall-E depicted...I may be cynical here and honestly I don't give a fuck, I pretty much despise fat people...Some people need to put the fucking burger down and go outside and walk...Kids are fatter now too because their lazy ass parents can't take them outside and play...When I was a child I was practically locked out of the house until dark, we played until we were forced inside...now it's park the little shit in front of the xbox and let him go...I can't stand that, and they're cutting gym class from schools to once a week...WAY TO ENCOURAGE BEING ACTIVE! I could continue but between this topic and my Penguins losing tonight I have to stop for my own good.

Now I agree with 90% of what's been said. BUT from personal experience, I married a playmate (figuratively). She came down with Grave's Disease (a thyroid condition). She put on a lot of weight. She got super thin. She put on a lot of weight again. She is down to a healthy weight now, but not what she was when we married. She works out rigorously 3-5 times a week, but still has to watch every damn thing she eats. Medical issues do exist - just remember marriage is "in sickness and in health, for thin or for fat".

At the same time - I have no sympathy for "emotional eaters", or people who "just can't put it down" - BULLSHIT FATTY! Step away from the burger!!!

On a side note - anybody else notice that McDonalds doesn't even advertise to white people anymore?
