Im a cunt if i see people asking for shit on the street i just plain out ignore then and walk past or i give them a look of discust and say something to them.... but here in NZ we have a pretty good welfare system so no one here should be homeless... i have no pity for the homeless in my country... the ones that are usually just druggies and what not... but no opinion of overseas homeless as i havnt experienced them first hand

I usually just ignore them, but once a homeless guy walked around in the train late night, and asked if we wanted to give some money to a crazy homeless guy. I laughed and gave him some money, he's probably the only homeless I've ever given money to.

Seeing someone homeless laying in the street is one of the few things in this world that actually make me feel bad for someone.

Most of the time the person has viable skills that could be used to get a job - but once they start in the spiral they think its hopeless and cannot get out.

The tough part most people fail to understand is that if someone loses everything and has to sleep on the street - its not exactly the easiest thing to get up the next morning and go to a job interview. Perhaps its the lack of a telephone to contact an employer - or the fact that they smell like piss from sleeping in the street.

For me it all depends on how they ended up homeless in the first place.

Alcoholic? You deserve it. Get off the fucking booze.

But if someone is getting a divorce and loses his job along with everything he/she owns to a crazy fucking ex -wife/husband.. then I feel bad for the dude/woman.

Alcoholism/drug addiction is a disease.....approx 70 % of homeless are afflicted. That, of course, doesn't mean that all people that drink to excess and to assness are alcoholics.....sometimes it just means loser . It sure is a funny disease cause, unlike most cancer patient, a LOT of alkys do some really messed up shit.

Yesterday...I saw something that really caught my eye though.....it was a street guy down at the river (the bike/walking trail runs down there and a lot of homeless hang down there), he was siting on a rock in the sun....and shaving. It was just an odd sight.

I am lucky that I am healthy, half way intelligent (many would argue that) and that I come from a home with a heart... not a resentment. There used to be a GIANT myth about the welfare Cadilac... sure there are ALWAYS people to take advantage.... but I'd rather let those poor suckers slide and go after the REAL monsters- the poluters, the pension fund raiders, the fleecer of the elderly etc, the fake war mongers. Why not go after large ass wipes vs a few scammers that are, in reality, not an issue. It seems so pussy to ream the poor, the insane and the not to bright.... but then that's a lot easier than picketing a Walmart.

the people i know that take advantage are very healthy and very bright, thats what pisses me off about them taking advantage. Plus if you look at the amount of little things that people take advantage of, when you add them together they add up to one HUGE ass scheme
[/reply]

I can't say, as I don't know your people, BUT... I really could never use the terms "bright and healthy" in the same sentence with "taking advantage". I can't say to much more about the real dollars and cents without getting political. Even if you talk real numbers people get mad. However, and as Latino pointed out, welfare in the U.S. is nothing. Look at health insurance cost for just ONE thing and tell me whose really taking advantage-- the poor or the drug companies.
[/reply]

edit: maybe i should phrase it more like

they have no physical limitations
are intelligent with no common sense
and are just plain lazy

the homeless are a very complicated mix of addiction to alcohol and drugs, mental illness (bipolar disorder, schyzophrenia, etc...), depression, laziness, low self-esteem, and much more. each one of them has a different story as to how they wound up where they are, but it usually all leads back to an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs. i deal with the real homeless every day at work, i've never met one of them that wasn't at the very least a raging alcoholic. i make it a rule to NEVER give them money. that money that you think is going towards a meal for them is really going towards alcohol, drugs, and prostitution. many, who are not suffering from mental illness, are very capable of getting off the street, but in order to do that they have to be willing to kick their addiction, and they are simply not willing to do that. for some, perhaps, the system has failed them, but for most, they are where they are because it's the easiest way to avoid facing their addiction. there are countless programs for them that could help them out of their situation, but they opt for the free meals from shelters, and money from strangers to get by and to get their next high.

without getting political....if they came here, theyd be riding for free, and in comfort.

you guys in the US dont know what a real welfare state is
[/reply]

We have a bunch of laws here that basically state that as long as a person can still make decisions they can't be forced to live in shelters or stay in mental hospitals. I feel bad for homeless families and I do give money and clothes to the local food bank here. Talking to the people there, there are just some people that want to live that way.

^^^I agree 100%^^^^- i am too in detroit and i frequently find my car littered with alot of empty pop bottles worth 10 cents each (see) http://www.whatboyswant.com/forum_read/2912602/4/10.

So i give them to the real homeless- and sometimes i buy more take out at lunch then i need and i also give that to certain homeless (leftovers) ---again----http://www.whatboyswant.com/forum_read/2912602/4/10

have you ever seen a fucking hungry ass homeless person run on 2 stubs to get some leftover??? It makes you think!

a guy wrote earlier that he worked with the homeless and traced a large percentage of the problems to drug and alcohol abuse.... and then goes on to state, refering to the issue of stopping the usage; "they are simply not willing to do that". Unfortunately, because true alcoholism is a disease (accepted by the Amer Med Assoc and Amer Psych Assoc et. al.) it is sort of like asking a diabetic to stop having the disease. A disease, by the way, that cam be arrested and treated (to some degree) by changing diet....which, for many "they are simply not willing to do that". The difference, of course, is that most diabetics don't kill people from drunk driving or beat their wifes etc (although diabetic shock does cause accidents and diabetes is fast becoming a HUGE drain on the insurance system). Most people can have a few drinks and stop which, I believe, contributes to the misunderstanding about the disease of alcoholism. What I don't fully understand is the need to look down on people... especially sick people. vs feel grateful for NOT being sick, lazy, or many of the things stated in this thread.

A few years a go Time magazine did an article on twin brothers who had grown up with an alcoholic, abusive shit of a father who beat and raped them regularly.

One brother was a homeless alcoholic drug addict and the other was a highly successful businessman.

When asked why they had turned out like they did, they both had exactly the same answer - "Beacuse of my dad".

One used their childhood as an excuse and the other as a motivator.

So my opinion is that you can say all you want about disease lack of opportunity and stuff, but at the end of the day it really just comes down to have you got the balls to try or are your just a loser
