I dont know if anyone has heard of this, im sure that some of you must have.

http://folding.stanford.edu/

Folding@Home is a website dedicated to "understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases"... they do this by having people help them by downloading a small program onto your home (or work) computer, which basically does nothing but folds proteins and relays the data back to them.

the more folding that happens and more data they get back, the more likely they are able to cure diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and others.

i started a "team" for us on the site named WhatBoysWant. when you download the small program which is free, you create a username and you can put all of your "points" that you earn by the folding that you do on your computer towards our team.

heres a cap from where i created our team, it has our team number in it, so be sure to put this number in where it asks you for a team number to put your points towards

you can then check on our team statistics here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teamstats

i love this site and the idea that the more people use their computers to let this really small program run in the background, its a way of helping cure these diseases by doing hardly nothing at all.

you can download the program by going here: http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

I'm in. Just one question though. How much bandwidth does this use? Just curious. I have a 6 meg DSL, so I can probably spare it.

I guess the bandwidth usage is really low, but the CPU usage is even bigger because the counting.

awesome

well when you download it and youre putting in your username and your team number after it installs, you can choose how much you want it to use, but it automatically sets it at the lowest setting possible i think. im not sure exactly how much but i cant even tell its running at all... hardly none, i would think. if it took up any bandwidth worth noticing im sure a lot less people would help out :P

I didn't think of that.My CPU is running at 100% now. Nor sure if that's good.

Those programs usually start the counting when your computes is idling. So if you are currently doing something with it, the programs sleeps. seti@home did it like that so I guess folding is similar.

The only things that were'nt there before are:

winFAH.ese and FahCore_78.exe

And both are set for low priority.

Fucking typos. My keyboard is so messed up. Time to buy a new one.

But yeah, the program should work like I described. But the CPU usage can be 100% all the time if you're not on it doing something. If you are a hardcore supporter, you should make a linux server and count the stuff with it.

Maybe it only puts you on the list after you folded some... Just have to wait and see I guess.
