Alright I'm down for it. My grandma is suffering through Parkinson's and my grandfather died from cancer so of course I will do what I can. I got both my computers running it, my 2nd one I rarely use but it's on 24/7.

If you really want to help find cures, I'd recommend learning more about stem cells and nanotechnology.

In the meantime though, this helps too.

Go team!

This will undoudtebly come as quite the bitter pill to the 360 fanboys, but it seems that the PS3 can also run this program when not being used by a game.

No, the PS3 doesn't have to be left on, it can be left in sleep mode (or whatever their version of "not active but still doing shit" is).

So... If you have a PS3, check the home page here to find out how to help out.

I'd have put it in the news section, but I doubt it would have made it past the psychophants.

Here works.

Bitter how? That they won't be burning their consoles as opposed to CPUs that are modular and can have parts replaced easily?

There are only two stages of electronic status. On and Off. If its in sleep/low power mode it is still on.

Yes all two of you who have PS3s.

Now keep in mind data processing of this kind requires general purpose CPUs. CPUs with caches, Out-of-Order instruction, and branch prediction. Of which the PS3 only has one.

@ Lobotomy: Yeah, but it'd be cheaper to build a dedicated PC for that kinda price. You'd get better performance and be a helluva lot cheaper.

Yeah I know. I just recently ordered a third pc to be replace my secondary. For less then the price of the PS3 I can run FAH and plenty of other applications/games as needed.

Also good for a torrent box as well, using a lightweight client like uTorrent or Transmission (or BTHD) with a bandwidth cap that is also good to go.

That is true but I would never ever ever think about running uTorrent or BitTornado on a computer I'm not using.

Oh man, you guys made a mistake starting this...it becomes SO addicting. I'm a member of team 11314 [Extreme Overclocking Forums, user name = MaGG], and it's like a drug to us over there. The stats are based from our website [see here: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ].

I didn't read through the whole thread, just a few things, but I'll say that this client takes up NO bandwidth. The only time the internet goes active is to either upload or download a WU.

As far as the PS3 folding, it's not worth it...the client is still very beta, and those things overheat so quickly that it ends up hurting it.

The best way to get a high PPD at the moment is to either run two instances if you have a dual core CPU, run GPU folding if you have one that can handle it [the ATi X1*** series], or run SMP folding if your chip supports VT and you have Linux installed. Of course, you can still run it if you don't have Linux installed, you just have to run VMware with your choice of distro.

If anybody has questions, let me know. Good job guys for starting to fold!

I didn't think of that.My CPU is running at 100% now. Nor sure if that's good.

Those programs usually start the counting when your computes is idling. So if you are currently doing something with it, the programs sleeps. seti@home did it like that so I guess folding is similar.

seti@home was tight, this sounds like a good idea too, im down. Is seti still around?

I've got an old comp that doesn't do anything right now. This will be a good way to make good use of it. I'll be folding away also
