This was taken about 2 blocks from my house...technically in town still, but on the outskirts. On the highway I drive every day you absolutely have to watch for deer all the time....I've hit 2.

Wow, you live out in the boondocks!!

Just kidding ... cool pic.

Do you have to worry about Moose when you're driving?

If so, be careful ... dangerous to hit one of them.

No, no moose. There is the odd one around here, but they're more likely to be found a little closer to the mountains.

Animals I could run over in my car on a daily basis:
- deer
- foxes
- coyotes
- gophers
- Elk
- skunks
- porcupine
- badgers

I have to worry about all of the above too, except Elk ... and Gophers aren't above ground all that much. Maybe you mean woodchucks, or groundhogs they're also known as?
#4226034
Gophers are smaller than woodchucks and groundhogs. I believe I've heard them called prairie dogs.

They're all rodents anyway, but this is a gopher ...

The animal in your image is a ground squirrel ... Richardson's Ground Squirrel to be exact. Many people call them prarie gophers, but they are not technically gophers.

Funny story ... the university from my state ... Minnesota Golden Gophers ... they are actually Thirteen-lined ground squirrels they are mis-named after.

Wow, I did not know that horni... very interesting

I'm feelIng both shocked and betrayed by this new revalation. I've spent 26 years believing that my picture was a gopher. I had to google it myself because I was preparing an argument with you...lol

Ha ha ... don't try and argue with me ... stick to your sea creatures missy miss

Here is a Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel (or golden/striped gopher as most people call them). He was in my driveway last summer, and this pic is through the window. Sadly, I think I saw him later out in front of my house on the road, looking a bit flat on the pavement. Another one has moved in though to take its place, and conveniently use the previous one's home and tunnel system. It is hibernating now, but in spring I will again see it under the bird feeder filling it's cheeks with seeds.

You can't see it's back ... but it is golden and has stripes ... also called a Federation squirrel because the patterns resemble the stars and stripes on the U.S. flag. Also, many people mistake them for Eastern Chipmunks.

How big is that squirrel horni? Seems a bit to big to be mistaken for a chipmunk...

How much wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker's pecker were wood?

They are small, about the same exact size as a Eastern Chipmunk I think.

Yeah, it does look big in the picture ... but nothing in the pic to gauge size.

I live in the east, well Ohio, and our chipmunks are, at best, about 5 or 6 inches long, thats why I was curious how big that squirrel was...

(not my pics)

Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel: 6 - 8 inches, tail 2 - 5 inches

Eastern Chipmunk: 6 - 8 inches, tail 3 - 4 inches

Ok then horni, the pic does make the squirrel look a bit bigger than it is

Damn, I'm actually learning on a pron site...Awesome
#4226045
I guess the ones around these parts are the Richardson's Ground Squirrel then...cuz they look exactly like these guys.

Probably ... I've seen mountains in your pics so I'm guessing you are in western Canada somewhere. Richardson's range is from central Alberta down to Montana, over to western Minnesota.

If you are in eastern Canada, then you might be seeing Franklin's ground squirrels. They look very similar.

I'm in Alberta.

Do you know what kind of lizard it is? I'm not very familiar with different lizard species, since we don't have many where I live.
