Sorry about the delay.
As far as this "situation" goes, I have a few thoughts, and I'll touch specifically on the mod/member relationship in a moment.
Certainly, there has been a decrease in the camaraderie of the forum. The atmosphere that once existed where intelligent people shared discussion, humor, and time is sorely lacking. I understand this is a porn forum first and foremost, however, the pornography is not what makes a good community. For the most part, the porn was just the drawing point for most of the "regulars" who stayed because of the community. When people come to the site for the people, yet stay for the community, a problem arises when the community starts to wither.
The reasons for this are numerous, and it would be an impossible task to point to any one specific reason why this has happened. I mentioned my thoughts with regard to that in the thread that was linked in Vic's original post, so I won't go into that in detail here, other than to say I think there are a few minor changes that, along with the passage of time, can lead to increased non-porn forum activity. These include stopping the auto-locking of older threads, and only locking threads that have either broken a rule of some sort, are spam and/or useless, or have reached their maximum number of pages. I really believe the auto-lock feature that kills any ability to add to a good thread without going through the time-consuming and annoying process of asking a global or specific forum mod to unlock that thread to contribute something new or interesting to an old thread that may have been of good quality but just momentarily forgotten. I also think that the deletion of the spam threads has led to people not really caring about the spam threads, and while I understand the reason for deleting them, it tends to keep a number of people from contributing to them, and there is a large social aspect to those threads that tends to create the type of camaraderie that is lacking, and that is part of the reason for the decreased community forum activity. Finally, and I know this issue has been raised more than once in the past, as the site ages and the average user post count/score increases, WBW should look into adding more ranks above Demigod, to give some of the older members a little added incentive to continue to strive for something. These measures, along with our continued attempts to keep discussion moving in a forward direction will go a long way in revitalizing our forums. (Also, I think people would really like the Youtube/video embedding, but thats not a major issue currently, although innovation and new features are usually appreciated by the members, such as the quick view and news section, etc)
As for the Mod/member relations there is a level of inconsistency that I'm not sure how best should be dealt with. There are times that we are expected to be assistants to the members, and help them if they're having troubles with the site, but there are also times when we are expected to mete out discipline for the people who have trouble following the rules. Personally, I'm not asked many questions, but generally answer most innocent queries without injecting vitriol in most instances, but this is just how I've dealt with things, and everyone has their own style. However, those individual styles are what tend to alienate members, when they expect all mods to act in the manner of one or another, which is unrealistic, yet understandable. My general thought is that we, as a group, should display as much patience as possible with new members when it comes to genuine questions or concerns that are raised in an appropriate manner. I know many of the questions can get repetitive and annoying, like the questions "where are my credits!?" and such, and even answering with irreverent humor is fine, but in the end that's what we're here for. Additionally, the "Fuck off if you don't like it" attitude that I've noticed is really unacceptable for a group of people who's basic job is to keep the site running well.

Ok, seriously, if people don't like it here, they should just piss off and leave. I don't see why they have to make this big deal about it, like we really care...
This is a terrible attitude. We should care if people are leaving because they no longer like the site. If enough people do it we turn into the regular, run of the mill porn site, and the site will suffer as a result.
Even Kanzen's comments in this thread made to a guy with only 2 posts:

give me pause. I'm fairly sure his original comment was made tongue-in-cheek, but the member did have a point with regard to his second comment, especially considering that the answer to which Kanzen is referring is incomplete. This particular poster did a fairly competent job of defending himself, but this is the type of situation where a member of lesser intelligence could very easily be put off by it.
Further, while members ideally should post logical, meaningful content, that is not going to always happen, and I don't think it's our right to delete their posts or comments just because we feel they aren't well thought out or informative. Overall, the less member content that we delete, the happier the members are going to be and so long as the content isn't putting the site in legal jeopardy or offensive I don't see why we can't leave it. If content is worthless to some it may not be to others, and if it is useless to all it serves as interesting fodder for conversation.
As for the comment from pac-man with regard to the "country club mentality", I agree completely. The thing is, that's what a forum is. When a group of people become familiar with each other there will be groups, cliques that form and one must show their worth before being accepted into said group. Like in most aspects of life, respect here rightfully needs to be earned. Our goal should be to get more people into the "country club."
To be fair, I also am of the opinion that there
are times when acrimonious responses are warranted. When long time members continue to break rules, or when someone crosses major lines, using racial slurs or posting child porn, for example. I certainly am the last person who should be telling others that they have to be nice to everyone, but I think we, as a whole, could probably use a little more discretion when using our modding powers.
