Frankly, raising the minimum wage is a temporary, bandaid solution. Great, raise the minimum wage to $12/hour. So now the minimum wage worker has a living wage for the time being, until - as noted - the market normalizes and now $12 is the new impoverished.
The problem is more at the top and the income disparity will still continue to grow. It'll just be stunted for a few years. So without any social programs at all, that leaves people screwed, even when working. But hey, you know what they say - a country with people who can't afford to feed or house themselves is a strong country.
And it's all completely worth it to make sure that the limited few who are abusing the system are stopped, even if it would sacrifice the majority of folks who receive support and are using it properly.
