English (UK only - no US) "What is your favourite colour?"
Some French (Ah, Paris, la ville la plus belle du monde!)
A tiny amount of very rusty German (Schade dass ich habe so viel vergessen)
I'm completely fluent in C, C++ and Pascal ( main() { printf ("Hello world\n" ) ; } )

I speak Finnish as my native language and am almost as fluent in English. I can quite well manage with Swedish, but am not quite fluent in it anymore due to lack of practice.

Oh, samples...

English : Island, island, grassy island. Grassy Islands bride.
Finnish : Saari, saari, heinäsaari. Heinäsaaren morsian.
Swedish : Ö, ö, hö ö. Hö ös mö.

The Finnish and Swedish samples are translations of the English poem above.

I can also muddle my way through most texts written in German and understand most of what is said in it.

I should be able to get a hotel room and breakfast in Italian and a cold beer in Spanish. I know how to confess undying love in Russian and how to compliment a girl on her nice figure in Japanese... Very usefull skills indeed, in case I happen to be in Spain staying at a hotel owned by an Italian, fall in love with his Russian Au Pair, whose mother was Japanese and taught her the language... A likely situation to come across, wouldn't you say?

I Was born and raised in the US but, Espanol era mi primer idioma (Spanish was my first language). My parents didnt speak much english when they first came here from Uruguay. So my sisters and I learned english in school. The ironic thing now is, my son started kindergarten this year and I put him in a Spanish Imersion program to learn espanol.

I took the samples from a joke that goes around here in Finland where a Swede and a Finn argue about whose language is more beautiful. To decide the matter they asked an English poet and linguist to judge their translations of his poem...

Here in the u.s. you are chastised if you speak more than one language other than english. Unlike the rest of the world. Many states have tried to make "english" the official language. Of course the english know we dont speak english. we speak american english or alabamian or new yorker english etc etc etc

Then I'm like what language is that ?

Do people from Marseille speak a different type of French? My family is from there but didn't realise they don't sound the same as someone from Paris

In fact, people from Marseille speak same french than Paris ones, same words, same places, but the pronounciation can be really different. French people aren't tricked by those accents, it only signs where peope come from. But i can understand that for foreigners it could be a real mess. Same for me when i hear american people. I fully understand CNN journalist, and i'm totally f***d when i hear Texas people
