i dont understand why the hole is there....is it just to put your stuff in? are they usually free for all to use or do you dig your own? i guess my american "sensibilities" dont understand this hole concept...we usually bring our own ice chests or storage for our things....not dig holes, could someone describe this to me better?

@powerflux u r dutch and dont get it either? is it a dutch hole digging ritual or german...or dutch but germans do it too? im looking for a broader explanation please

some dutch do it too, but i think it's a german ritual.. they want to have fun at *mess up* our beach because they don't have one..

it could be to protect them from the sun, if they covered themselfs with sand while lying in the hole. it could also be for being busy with something.
