This videotape shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The Euro Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties.
All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat.". All conversations between the commandos are in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves.
The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives, and then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it.
The commandos sank the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hung.
I would think from now on, Russian ships will not be targets for Somalian pirates.

That's the fucking way it should be done. But even more so, why wait until the ship is taken. Just get in and sink all the pirate ships before they attack

I think this is horrendous actually. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favour of piracy, and allowing these pirates to do whatever they wish. But I certainly don't think its the place for these Russian "soilders" to be judge, jury, and executioners.
You don't like pirates being blown up and sunk with their ship? Well, navies around the world are allowed to sink/kill any pirate they see without question. I think they've been fairly patient over off Somalia in waiting until pirates actually take over a ship rather then sinking every "fishing boat" they see as pirates.
You forget, pirates are not nice people and are rather violent due to their chosen profession. I personally don't want to try and "understand" and try to rehabilitate them. I also don't want to pay their incarceration for the rest of their lives. Plus, killing them sends a message to all the rest of the survivors..Don't fuck with us.
If someone chooses to make a living that way, then they shold be prepared to deal with the consequences. A drug dealer, or burglar has higher chances of being robbed, shot or killed than the "average Joe", law abiding worker does. A pirate has a higher chance of being executed without someone giving a damn about their right to a fair trial, than let's say ... a fisherman.
I don't feel sorry for the pirates.

I think that in some cases Somalian piracy is simply a way to survive for these people. When its tv's and blu-ray players being stolen thats one thing, but when its food being stolen...in my opinion thats a different situation. Its believed that the first Somali pirates were ex fishermen that took to piracy as a way to survive; due to the civil war, over fishing, and toxic waste dumpings by their own government that all but destroyed their fishing livelihood.
Again, not saying that what they're doing is right, but lets see you act any different when your family is starving to death.
An act of piracy according to international law is an act of WAR. I have been personally involved in counter piracy interdiction and if i could tell you the PR BULLSHIT you would change your goddamned toon about being civilized and what not. Those pirates KNOW INSIDE AND OUT what the fucking gutless wonders that dictate the ROE are about. PIRATES KNOW OUR ROE's because the media puts our troops in harms way by telling them. Governments dont want to escalate the situation out there because of our chicken shit politicians and the chicken shit people who support "fair trials" on these pieces of shit. If you were on a yacht sailing out there, they have no problem raping the women and killing everyone just because they can. so fuck off with your "this isnt right" horseshit. if you really want to make a difference, strap on your sailor rig and go out and see for yourself the bullshit thats going on before you open your chicken shit mouths.
Should happen more often, Maritime Law why should anyone be put in danger because of pirates sink any boat outside a 2 mile limit or blast the hell out of Somali(hang)
hence there was nothing personal in my post, noone was centered out, it was a general sweeping comment to whomever holds that opinion. I adhered succinctly to Rule #1
when an act of war is committed, and your enemy is armed, as these guys were in the video, then yes they deserve to be killed. having been there and know a little of their tactics, they wouldnt think twice about gunning someone down. they were lucky the russians gave them time before blowing up the ship. If it were a North american military then there would be much discussing about how the pirates felt about being detained...and not wanting to upset them, probably let them go with a disapproving look and a stern voice to not do it again. then they just go out and capture another vessel. i cant and wont get into what i personally experienced apart from what i have said, but i implore the people who support giving them trials etc, to remove the rosey coloured glasses and try not to be so naive. they lie, they kill, and will do anything to preserve themselves. One mention i should make, is that they often say they are fishermen, out for x amount of days, yet they have no fishing gear, no ice in their holds to keep the fish, and often have gobs of cash on their ships....they are warriors...let them die as such since its the path they chose.
Forgive me if I find laws which allow murder via tying people to a boat and then blowing them all up a bit...well...barbaric and inhumane.

Yes, I'm aware that these people are likely criminals, but that doesn't justify lowering ourselves to their level of activity. Civilized societies ought to be above that kind of activity. That's what separates "us" from "them," you know?
I think if they were going to blow them all up they should have just done it. Capturing the boat, capturing the pirates, searching the boat, and making a whole show of it THEN blowing them all up is a little much whatever the law is.
Unfortunately, I do believe however that this sort of thing is necessary sometimes. It's not about being barbaric or civilized it's a matter of consequence. What separates "us from them" is the reason for our actions not the acts themselves. I'm not saying its right or wrong it just is what it is, this world is a damn ugly place and nothing is black and white.
