Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Sunday of an apparent drug overdose, law enforcement sources said.

Police said Hoffman, 46, was found on the bathroom floor and pronounced dead at the scene.

Yeah, I felt pretty sad about it until I heard it was an overdose. It's sad to lose such an amazing talent to something so meaningless. Then I was just disappointed.

He's had trouble with alcohol and drugs in the past. Went through rehab. Unfortunately, it looks like he went back to it.

He was a brilliant, brilliant actor. My heart goes out to his partner & three children. So sad

I was just sad in general. I don't care about his recreational activities, and I'm not going to judge him for it. To me i's just as tragic as if he'd died of a heart attack or car accident.

We lost one of my favorite actors today, and that sucks, regardless of the reason.

This really sucks. One of my favorite actors. Pretty much every movie he was is was awesome. They could probably make a Weekend at Bernies 3 with him playing Bernie and he would probably still win an Oscar. What an unfortunate loss.

It sucks for his family, not him. Too bad he was so selfish as to chose drugs/alcohol over his family, I have no sympathy for those types. Unfortunately the media loves to repeatedly put these movie stars/musicians on a pedestal and perpetuate the problem.

So, because the guy had an addiction then, fuck him? Substance addiction is a serious disease. Did the man make the mistake of getting into the drug lifestyle? Yes but that doesn't make him some kind of monster. The dude messed up and unfortunately for some, it doesn't take much of a mistake to send your life spiraling downward. He shouldn't be revered for his drug use but he shouldn't be vilified for it either.

Yes, because everyone knows the ramifications of trying it even once. Too fucking bad.
Besides, to call it a disease is a complete joke. That label is just so people can charge recovery to insurance.

You have apparently never made a mistake. Nor have you ever known anyone who had struggled with substance abuse. Good for you.

Hey Davey, get a clue, trying/doing drugs is NOT a mistake.

Hate to break it to you, fella, but you're a drug user.

Not always. Sometimes a doctor prescribes them to you. I have a good friend that was prescribed some strong painkillers after surgery. Unfortunately for her, she was unaware of the addictive properties of opiates. By the time she finished what her doctor had prescribed, she had developed a physical addiction. Now breaking an opiate habit isn't as easy as just saying no. You go through physical withdrawal symptoms. You get sick, very sick. So in order to keep from getting violently ill, she had to purchase more pain pills through the black market. There is a huge oxycontin black market in south Florida. Google it for more info. Well, you see, the black market pain pills get very expensive. Sometimes as much as $15-$20 per pill. As an addict you need to take more and more to keep from getting "dope sick". You're not taking pills to get high, you're taking them to stay normal. Well after a while, those pills can get too expensive so you need to find a cheaper alternative. Heroin (also an opiate) delivers the same chemicals as the pain pills but at a much lower cost. So yes, my friend was a heroin addict. A junkie, dope head, strung-out, needle in the arm desperate for more, addict. Fortunately for her, she has a family that cares about her who is wealthy enough to afford a treatment facility. (A lot of people can't afford this luxury) She is now clean of any opiates and works at a facility helping other addicts. You see, when you witness first hand what happens when a good person becomes an addict, you tend to have a little more empathy than "fuck them". Pray that nobody you know ever has to deal with this sort of problem.

Some antidepressants have the same withdrawal effects as heroin also.

The wife is trying to get off cymbalta, she's been on it for 2 years, we've made 2 trips to the hospital because of horrible withdrawal symptoms, shaking, blurry vision, headaches, nausea, vomiting, I could go on, but I won't. My point, like Davey, even if prescribed by a doctor, your aren't assured to not have drug problems.

Side note, cymbalta is FUCKING EVIL, my advice for anyone with depression issues, see a good therapist and stay the fuck away from antidepressant drugs!!!

You gotta watch out for a lot of those anti-depressants. My ex was bipolar and she took a strange cocktail of medication that seemed to change from month to month. It was constantly changing because of the side effects the medications would have. Some would work fine but if you took them in conjunction with another type, you could experience harmful effects. Unfortunately for some people, medication is warranted. I agree it should be the last option once everything else has been tried but some people truly can't function without it. Thankfully there's nothing that a good alcohol blackout can't fix for me.

I get that even prescription drugs administered by doctors can become highly addictive, but ultimately the user has to accept personal responsibility. I have had numerous surgeries in the past and have been prescribed all kinds of different pain killers, but I take very little, if any, because I know the addictive side affects. Society now days has a very difficult time accepting ANY personal responsibility and is always looking to point fingers, but it all boils down to the individual in the end. No one is going to look after you like YOU.

That's true to an extent but do you know what's really in prescription drugs? I wouldn't trust them 100% either.

I never said it was anybody's fault that Hoffman did drugs. All I said was he wasn't a bad person. In fairness, did he ever actually hurt anybody else? He chose to do drugs and died because of it. He doesn't deserve to be vilified.
