Can't wait until we're able to actually open up our windows. Think we'll get there by the end of October?

Probably not untll late December for us south Florida folk. It gets cooler a lot sooner in O-town though. I miss my winter time $70 electric bills.

Not actually most of the budget (meaning less than 50% of the whole budget), but it is the largest single budget item. 35% of the federal budget is spent on the military. And that's even understating it a bit (Nuclear programs, for example, are budgeted under the Department of Energy, IIRC, and there are assorted other accounting tricks).

It's not an opinion, dood. Military members are federal employees.
Discretionary/non-defense is military?

It's a solid 3 and a half hours to downtown Orlando from here. About 3 hours to UCF.

$70?
Is that for three months?
My last quarterly bill was just over $1000.
What on earth is going on?

Nope, I pay Florida Power and Light monthly. However, in the winter time, I don't have to use the air conditioner nerly as much so my bill is really cheap. This summer, my bill has been between $140-$170 per month. Not bad for an older house. My place is not huge, only a 2/2 and the a/c unit is fairly new, so it's pretty efficient.

lulz FP&L. those fuckers have so much money, it's crazy. We have Progress Energy up here in Orlando.
We do work for both at their power plants all the time. FP&L has a massive like "compound" of units down in Fort Lauderdale that we do work at continually. We actually have a couple guys staying down there this week working on a suppression system install for one of the turbines. I always have to order the crazy shit for those projects.... like explosion proof pull stations and ceramic wire nuts that can withstand 2900F worth of heat in the turbines.
$170 for a summer month in Florida isn't that bad if you're in a house. that's how much ours has been and we're in a 3/2 large apartment.

Do you actually have a choice for power in Orlando? Or is it monopolized like here? FP&L has all these T.V. commercials advertising for a product that you have to buy. There's no other option, unless you want to put a windmill in your yard and solar pannels on your house. Why have commercials?
I was actually supprised at how cheap our electric bill has been though. My house is like 50 years old but the roofing, insulation and a/c unit are all farily new. Plus we have ceiling fans in every room, including the kitchen and patio. Makes a big difference when you don't have to crank the a/c down to 72 to be comfortable.

I hear ya. My electric is over $300/m all summer long. Sucks.
So does sweltering heat, so I guess the bill must not suck too bad if I'm willing to pay for it.

True Florida house = fans in every room including the kitchen
We don't have a choice here either, but i'm not sure if there are commercials for it or not.... Other than movies on the digital cable channels we only watch a few series/shows and all of them we catch on demand so there either aren't commercials or they're like specialized for that demand program which i fast forward through :P
You should just build a windmill.

Man, I'm looking forward to summer. Cold showers and a fan cuts the bill down quite a bit I'd imagine. But We'll see

Yes.
Either that or I read it as Defense non-discretionary because I can't read.
One or the other.
Either way, it's still the largest single line item when you include things like the military-related costs like the Dept of Veterans affairs, CIA, Homeland Security, DoE, etc. I think just adding the Veterans Administration puts it above Social Security, in fact.

I've had a pod of dophins playing/feeding 20/30 yards off the beach all morning, between the beach and the sandbar. Kinda rare. Very cool. The sandbar is only about a foot deep, and they keep chasing mullet up onto the sandbar where there's not enough water to cover their whole bodies. Major slashing and splashing.
The battery in my camera is dead Grrrrrrrrr.

Sounds like you didn't figure out the cost of ownership before you bought the house. Sort of like someone in Massa chusetts complaining about the cost of heating oil during winter as an unexpected expense.
Maybe it is just human nature that every expense is excessive. I find this very foolish, but somehow natural.
Just sayin'

It wasn't a lite hearted decision and the costs were known. Most positives have their drawbacks as well. I guess that's just one of them.
