Obama vs The Cambridge Cop

Whats your take on this issue

I don't think it had anything to do with race and everything to do with the police being absolutely out of control in this country. They're power hungry maniacs. This is America you should be allowed to yell at any cop you want to on your own damn property especially when you've done nothing wrong.

The cop should've left as soon as he realized it was the man's house. Period. That's why the charges got dropped so fast cause the state attorney took one look at this shit and said "what the fuck? this is a media nightmare our cops are fuckin idiots." Cops want respect and are willing to find a reason to arrest you if they don't get it which is insane. There is no law that says you have to respect police only that you can't interfere with them. WHen you are on your own property breaking into your own house and you have proven this to them you should be damn well allowed to yell and say whatever the hell you want as long as you don't threaten them physically (which is illegal) and they should shut up, pack up their shit and leave.

This is one of those fun cases in which everyone involved is wrong.

The cop was obviously a dick and went way too far.
The professor was obviously a dick and needs to get that fucking chip off his shoulder.
The president needs to shut his mouth when asked to opine on a subject about which he knows little.
The media was obviously jizzing in their pants about the possibility of a scandal, so they had to run with the non-story.

The cop was there doing his job. He gets a call saying possible robbery in progress. On his way, he has to be prepared for anything, after all, robbers could be armed robbers. He gets there, and some pompass Harvard dude is belittling him, when ultimately, the cop was there to protect this guy's house. I learned when I was 16 to not be a smartass to a cop, let alone, calling them names (or reference their mamas, according to the report). If Skip Gates hasn't figured that out yet (what is he, probably 60?), then he deserved to be arrested.

Obama had foot in mouth disease plain and simple, by calling the police stupid after he just admitted that he didn't know the facts yet.

No. You're allowed to question cops. They're not some superhero who has unfettered power and the ability to tell the world what to do. People are not supposed to cower every time a cop comes around, barking out orders. The bottom line is that Gates reacted like an idiot, but the cop didn't handle it very well either. You don't arrest a man who is questioning why a cop is harassing him inside his own home for disorderly conduct because he said something about the cop's 'momma' and didn't want to leave his house for more questioning when he had done nothing wrong.

Gates reacted like an idiot. According to the info I have seen, the only ID he showed was his University Employee ID which did not have his address on it. That being said, the cop should have left it when the University Cops showed up and verified the guy.

IN all of that, Obama should have kept his mouth shut. Generally when you hear "I don't have all of the information" it is followed by "so I will have no comment". In this case, after admitting he was not privy to the info, he decided to make a judgment anyway. This could be damaging later if he doesn't start controlling his remarks better.

What?? That's just STUPID! Cops don't have a right to arrest you for back talking! This is America you have the RIGHT to be an asshole on your own property all you want without fear of arrest as long as you are not harming another human being. Just because you learned to bow down and bitch up to cops doesn't mean that's what you're SUPPOSED TO DO. That's what they want us all to do like trained fucking dogs. Thank God some people aren't pussies like yourself and don't because the next step is people getting arrested because a cop felt you looked at him wrong.

Gates acted like an IDIOT, agreed. The beauty is he's a free American citizen and has the RIGHT to be the biggest idiot on the planet if he so chooses without being arrested for it.

And the cop who arrested a free American citizen solely because the guy pissed him off? Do we want cops running around with the right to arrest people because said person pissed them off? Gates was arested for Disorderly Conduct because he was being a horses ass, not cooperating and screaming loudly and carrying on disturbing the neighborhood. The officer had no clue what he was walking into other than a possible burglary in progress.

He found Gates, who was being a dick. But, the officer still didn't know if there was a "legitimate burglar" in the house or not, and since Gates was not being cooperative in any way, I believe Gates could have also been arrested for obstruction (just my opinion). The issue of who lived there wasn't even an issue.

The cop was doing his job trying to figure out what the hell is going on there, and trying to keep the rightful resident of the home (Gates) safe and secure, andhe was doing it as thoroughly as he could having to deal with an asshole who has a chip on his shoulder (Gates). Gates should have been appreciative that the law was looking out for his safety, and not automatically "ASSuming" that the cop is a racist rogue cop out to get him because he's black.

It "citizens" like Gates that give "minorities" a bad name. Who's truly the racist in the situation?

if he was white, not Obama's friend, and the officer in question was black...you would have NEVER known this even happened.

The officer may have abused his power a little bit, the professor is a complete idiot for referencing the officers "mama" and obama should have NEVER mentioned it during a press conference. The "reporter" that asked the question is a White House planted reported. Placed in the audience to ask very very specific questions. Depending on how the press conference is going, the president (Obama's not the first to plant reporters in the audience) will either take the question and answer it or ignore it and keep going. His press conference on heatlh care was a complete waste of time and he needed to changed the subject in the media for a few days. Why not throw a racial story into the mix. Nothing says lets get our mind of a horrible health care idea than hating on whitey for a few days.

Ok, myabe to a degree I can go along with that (being an ass on your own property).

But you also have to remember that you can't be disturbing (ever heard of "disturbing the peace"?) or offending the public (neighbors, people passing by, children in the neighborhood).

Thus....Gates was arrested for DISORDERLY conduct, which is exactly what he was doing based upon the police report I have read, and the recently-released tapes of the incident and whatnot.

Good arrest, bad instructor (Gates).


The university should be embarrassed by Gates' actions and conduct. But...alas....betcha don't see the school pipe in that way

I wasn't aware that all cops are on power trips and looking to arrest anyone for anything. I guess I have contributed to this, you know, me bowing down, bitchin' up to them, reinforcing that power trip and corruption that all cops are seeking. Thank you so much for informing me. I just didn't know I had the right to act like and idiot. That should come in handy the next time one of these power hungry facists try to give me a speeding ticket. I'll try yelling at them and calling them names, cause damnit, I'm an American. I have a right to this, and a right to that, and should never be held accountable for my own actions. Again, thanks for the advice.

Wrong...all wrong...now the tapes are out of the 911 call...and the tape is out of the cop talking on his radio...no yelling occurred by Professor Gates...the cop had his drivers license, not his university ID...and the cops written report is also out.

Funny thing...the cop lied. Now don't that just piss you Fux Noise watchers off?

I'd like to ask the people who've had numerous bad encounters with the police how many times they think an average person has any sort of encounter with the police in their lifetime?
