I always figured that someone so obsessed with it, still had some doubt

In fact, and if I'm going to be nakedly honest here I think we are all guilty of this to some degree, I think a lot of what he wrote was more about convincing himself he was right, than convincing me I was wrong. But he was quite a thinker.

With regard to religion, I'm pretty sure his goal was to inform others that they were wrong. I won't say convince, because his style was not well suited for convincing the opposition they ought to reassess their convictions. It was more for the undecided, on-the-fence kind of people, IMO. Of course, over the years he'd managed to convince many believers, but that, I think, was not his primary intention.

However, I admire the man more for his writing and mental acumen than for any of his particular positions, which I often disagreed with to varying degrees. His writing is magnificent.

Here's 10 minutes of Hitch being what he was famous for.

But he only arrived on television and the lecture circuit by way of his writing which was just superb. It probably also helped that he took on a lot of taboo subjects. He wrote a book on why Henry Kissinger should have been tried and convicted for war crimes, and how much of a fraud and charlatan Mother Theresa was.

The Hitchens anecdote :

Two valium
A 5th of Scotch (Johnny Walker if you want to pay tribute)
And 10 minutes of Ann Coulter

Hannity seemed genuinely sorry. Over the course of telling how much he enjoyed debating with Hitch, he told the story of an event where Hitch and Coulter were at the same table and a crowd circled the table, enthralled by the conversation, which lasted several hours. He talked about the way he drank, and said something like "among the many things we disagreed upon, I believe in an afterlife, and I hope that when I die that if I'm right I have the chance to talk to him again. (be careful what you wish for Sean ), I'm sure he'll have a glass of scotch and that he'll see the humor in the outcome." it was something like that anyway.

For me, Hitch was little more than a novelty, who's ability to offend was matched by very few. Regardless of whether I agreed with him or not, he was consistent, and I can admire that in anyone.... which is proof that I'm conservative, because as we all know, Lefty's are the most intolerant people on the planet.

Well, he wasn't really that consistent, at least in the some of the more fundamental positions he took. His 180 degree flip from leftist Trotsky-ite to war-supporting ally of the Falklands War and more vividly throwing his weight behind what he considered an existential war against Islamofascism (a term he popularized, if not coined) after 9-11 was discomforting to a lot of his friends and supporters from the prior period.

As I said, I admire him more than anything for his ability to write. His confrontational style, acerbic wit and indulgent lifestyle was also kind of interesting, but beneath it all was his mastery of the language to a degree which I've rarely seen or heard. Make no mistake, I found those other things interesting and various levels of amusing, but they weren't the main reason for my admiration of him.

He's pretty sharp with the English language that Hitchens guy, my grandad used to speak like that, it obviously didn't rub off on me

It's something you don't see too often these days. I might make an attempt to read one of his books. Any recommendations?

And yeah Ramsays rack looks delicious

Depends on what you're looking for. The first thing I read of his was Why Orwell Matters, which was very good.

He's also written biographies of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine, critiques of Mother Theresa, Religion, Henry Kissinger and the Royal Family of England, and numerous other collections of essays and things. It's really more up to what kind of subject amongst those types of things you'd be interested in reading.

The bio's look alright, can't see the point in reading critiques about people I don't know although the religion ones could be interesting.

I like his take on Jewish circumcision... "take a baby boy's penis in my hand, cut around the prepuce, and complete the action by taking his penis in my mouth, sucking off the foreskin, and spitting out the amputated flap along with a mouthful of blood and saliva"
