Hitler and Ferdinand Porche developed the Vw Kafer, or the Kdf wagon back in the 30's.
It was Hitlers answer to help Germany out of poverty, after building roads building etc he wanted a family vehicle ( a car that would seat 4 people) that was cheap to run and cheap to buy, for his nation, so he went to porsche who was developing army vehicles for Hitler with this idea, and porche put it into production.
It was the best selling vehicle until very recently selling over 20million cars and being produced in many countries around the world, the most prolific being Germany and Brazil.
It has had many devolopments from back in the day, but essentailly the body shape and the air cooled aluminum rear placed engine have stayed the same since the begining.
The Beetle is very easy to work on and repair and probably has one of the biggest aftermarket tuning and parts markets in the world.
Because the beetle was made by Porsche, most of Porsches' vehicles were also based on modeified beetle chassis, most notably the first real Porsche sports car (and my favourite) the 356. this had a shortened beetle chassis with a twin carb 6 cylinder (as oposed to a 4 cylinder in the beetle) engine, this car went on to cousin many and most of porsches following cars, most notably the 911.

The picture of the beetle on the front page has a lot of porche parts including wheels exhaust and probably engine.

I have read many books on beetles and used to own one, a 1973 in black with white flanks, it had a 1600 engine with twin 40's carbs and it would shame a lot of modern cars nowadays! i miss that motor!

Nice. Nothing beats the fact you've owned it yourself. Best way to learn things.
