My mom, having recently received something of a partial living inheritance from my stepfather's mother, and being sick of hearing about how my busted old ride is always breaking and leaving me potentially transportationless at any moment, called me up last weekend and said she was giving me $7000 to buy a new car with. She accepted no argument or protestation about this from me, not that she got much. I was all but ordered to look into and find a new one soon, and I was to spend as much of-if not slightly more than-all of the $7K.
Just what kind of car to buy for $7K is not something that has kept me up a lot until this point in my life, so can anyone give me any sane suggestions as to what I could get, where to find it, some things to look for as far as flaws, what they may have bought for $7K in the recent past, etc? My criteria are that it must be clean, under 70K miles, CHEAP to drive (no hot rods, trucks or anything with more than four cylinders) and of decent quality (no late model Saturns or Chevy Cavaliers or Luminas, etc.).
I looked on Carmax and they do have some decent-shape cars, but not a hell of a lot to choose from in the $7K range. Now and then they do though.
