My sister just bought a 2003 Cavalier with just over 50,000 miles for $4995. Nice car, except that one of the power windows is spotty. Get something like that and you'll have a couple grand left to spend on hookers and booze!

dont get a cheap domestic such as a neon or a cavalier, they fall apart all the time....make sure you get an import, with regular upkeep they will last forever, and they're cheap to work on. then again i also have a 88 s10 2.5 liter 4 cylinder with 184,000 miles on it and it still runs great, im rebuilding it though. Like the one guy said just make sure you take your time and thoroughly check out every one you're interested in, dont get overexcited about havin free money to get a car and forget to make sure its a good one. (even though thats awesome by the way, congrats!)

Best joke ever!

Buy Honda Civic, that'll last forever man. Easy and cheap to fix, engines last longer than you ever could expect and really nice to drive. With vtec it's quick enough too.

you pretty much narrowed down your choices when you said that you wanted a four cylinder car and not a cavalier or a saturn. pretty much leaves foreign cars on the list.

i have about 15 years auto repair exp and the car that i have seen the least of is hondas. when i do it generally is for brakes or exhaust, something that is not unusual for any car to need. out of the honda i would say the best one is accord.

i have a sunfire with 160,000 miles on it and it runs like a champ. did a carfax history report on it and nothing major came up. would not hesitate to take it on a trip.

What idiot thinks BMWs last?? They have horrrrible service departments and maintenance costs a TON.

There's only one choice if I had that kind of budget- Porsche 944. If you find one with a well documneted service history, it'll keep you happy for many years.

Make sure you get one with a LOT of documentation. They're not new cars, but they're totally reliable if you treat them right. 4-cylinders, too. Don't know why that makes any difference...

Use the seven grand and use it as a down payment for a new car. 7 canolies is a serious amount of money for a down payment depending on your taste.

go back to your mom and tell her thanks, and you appreciate the $7k, but you really cant get anything worth pimpin out unless she could cough up another $5k. or, you could always invest the $7k for a quick profit.

have you thought of buying a car with a rebuilt title?

Toyota or Honda. 7k will get you a nice car, remember 100k miles on a honda is nothing.......

I'd say Toyota, Honda, or Subaru. Might be a little harder to track down a Subaru, but my car is 1993 Subaru Legacy Sedan, I bought it for $4k with 63k miles on it a few years past. Barely have put any money into it except for regular maintenance.

2001 or so Honda Civic, check out ebay.com to see real prices and what you will get. Dont be afrade to negotiate with the car lot, especally on used cars. You can easly go down 1000 from the asking price, start low and work slowly up in price. Also look in the trunk and around the car for body work to see if has been in an accident. Make sure is has no rust on it. Ask the dealership for the carfax report of the car. Have fun and good luck scott

My mom, having recently received something of a partial living inheritance from my stepfather's mother, and being sick of hearing about how my busted old ride is always breaking and leaving me potentially transportationless at any moment, called me up last weekend and said she was giving me $7000 to buy a new car with. She accepted no argument or protestation about this from me, not that she got much. I was all but ordered to look into and find a new one soon, and I was to spend as much of-if not slightly more than-all of the $7K.

Just what kind of car to buy for $7K is not something that has kept me up a lot until this point in my life, so can anyone give me any sane suggestions as to what I could get, where to find it, some things to look for as far as flaws, what they may have bought for $7K in the recent past, etc? My criteria are that it must be clean, under 70K miles, CHEAP to drive (no hot rods, trucks or anything with more than four cylinders) and of decent quality (no late model Saturns or Chevy Cavaliers or Luminas, etc.).

I looked on Carmax and they do have some decent-shape cars, but not a hell of a lot to choose from in the $7K range. Now and then they do though.

"no late model Saturns or Chevy Cavaliers or Luminas, etc."

ya might wanna start warming up to one of these cuz for $7000 and a four cylinder thats about all your gonna get

I would stick with either a Honda or a Toyota. They will last forever. The only problem with them is that they have such high resale value.
