The downside to diesel used to be that they were slow. But the current turbodiesels drive like petrol engines and deliver massive torque at low revs.

Search for "Turbocharged Direct Injection" on wikipedia.org for more info.

best bit advice yet.... also you can get a tuning box and add more power and still keep the mpg
here's a beemer diesel in action

problems with the newer VW's the computer is sooo sensative with the glow plugs, the computer measures the resistance to each plug, and if its off by a couple olhms it will pop an engin light, and youl hafta replace a $60 glow plug.
other than that they are great, i have a 93/94 deisel passat, and it works great, 800+ KM to the tank of deisel.

also with deisels you can toss on a propane injection and add about 50horsepower to it. with the way the engins are made they can take a lot of abuse on the insides of the cylenders.

dont expect a huge top speed. i think my passat redlines at 150-160 KMph (5 speed manual)

everyone on here is so wrong. Diesel is the only way to go, if you have any questions ask me. First off, you will get more power, better fuel eff, and less polution with newer turbos. You can get a lot of power out of that car, and top speeds are just as good as gas. 0 -60, not bad, 60-90 great. I have 10 different trucks and 2 cars that are diesel. All my trucks have massive power, and get 50% better fuel eff then the gas trucks and cars. Usually i get 15 -20 mpg in my Ds, and in the Gs i get around 10 always. Diesel is the future, cause most Ds can run on alternative fuels.

I'm buying a Jetta TDI and will burn biodiesel.

Other advantages...fewer engine component parts and longer lasting engine = decreased long term maint fees.

Most new gas vehicles can run on alternative fuel too. Not saying that d's cant, but don't forget the new gas cars are flex-fuel capable.

good on ya for choosing to run bio-diesel, gotta help the little man too.

Now for the original comment I was going to make....i'm sure that someone will come on here and talk about how "dirty" the fuel burns, and smog, and smoke...etc. Well Don't. The new diesel engines burn a whole lot cleaner than the old systems. In fact most gas stations around here have new diesel pumps, due to the fact that new '07 model year vehicles require an even lower sulfar content then before. If you don't believe me, just look at any of the newer semi's on the road and you will notice they don't smoke nearly as bad as they did 5 years ago.

**all comments are based on U.S. experience, can't comment on diesel vehicles used elsewhere in the world**

my passat even in the winter will smoke for about a minute untill the engin oil heats up enough to let it run properly. first start of the day puffs a little black smoke. after that it runs clean.

if you let the engin oil get to old it will begin to smoke as the oil will thin out the more pounding it gets. (this i know from experiance went about 6000k before an oil change should have been 3000, the oil was nasty)

thanks a lot guys

my uncle said that some repairs can be more expensive, but if you get the warranty you're in for a great deal

the model i was looking at had splits of 20/30 miles per gallon and then for the diesel 30/40, and with my job i do a lot of driving so this is very important to me

as for oil changes, i use synthetic to keep it cleaner and to get a bit extra life out of the oil change

any more input would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much guys

can you use synthetic oils in a diesel engine? I'm not sure i've ever seen anyone do it.

****disregard this question. Did some research and discovered that you can use synthetic in diesel engines as long as specs are met, like in gas motors****

Don't buy VW, too much problems nowadays. Buy the better solution from the corporation, Audi.

But to the question, modern turbodiesel technology is excellent, with chipped ECU or PSI box you can receive lots of extra power and torque.

well i was informed that you guys (europeans/germans) end up keeping the diesel vw's disappointing!

any new diesel is "good" but as ascaris already told the technology from audi is the best, they recently won LeMans in a diesel powered audi...
i myself drive a diesel from '92, a 2.1l turbodiesel, i'll reach about 1600km with one tank of diesel. so that is, in my opinion the best advantage of drivin' diesel!

diesel fuel also used to be alot cheaper than regular unleaded, now it's almost as much as the premium

It is as much as premium! I bought a Jetta TDI three months ago and VW has been awesome. We had a transmission issue that they did not even screw with, they replacecd the entire tranny $9,000.00 without any discussion.

I still prefer the sound of gas powered engines but at 50MPG (US) I am thrilled. Handling and resposiveness are very good.

I have to agree, if you have the money, buy the Audi but if you do not, the VW is an excellent alternative. Beats the crap out of hybrids.

I've got a Seat Ibiza with a 1.9 VW turbo diesel engine in it and it goes like buggery and I get about 450 miles out of a tank

VW's quality is going down. Hard fact, I know these things because I have connections in the garages all over.
