first of dont let anyone tell you diesel motors are slow (pull up beside a 2500 Cummins Ram with a programmer and tell him that), the only downside to diesels are that they are expensive to fix/repair if it ever occurs....diesels last more than twice as long as regular motors, make much more power and use less fuel

the best Diesels i ever drove was a BMW and a Mercedes. period

i think most of you guys got the reasons for buying a Diesel right.

Ascaris: VW is total shit like you said. their production costs and times are too high and every repair you pay 25% of the repair costs just for the name VW.

my advice: Get a german car if you want a good Diesel. German engineers allready have the best technologies in that. BMW or Mercedes should be your first choices. if thats too expensive, buy a Toyota. Their engines are as good as the BMW and Mercedes ones but are a bit cheaper

(offtopic) I heard the other day that dodge and chevy were both redoing thier diesel engines in their fullsize pickup line. Dodge is supposedly going to put out 800 horse and GM 700+!!! Not sure why you would need that much or if it's true, but damn that's crazy. hell my semi only puts out 600 true. Like i said just something i heard, and i'm still checking into it.

also remember a Diesel engine will last forever if you take care of it. my father has a 1999 7.3 Liter ford powerstroke that has a tank in the back that weighs about 7,000 lbs and he has put around 3,000,000 miles on it and its still going strong

I agree with j0lly that the German diesel motors are probably the best you can get. No matter whether it's BMW, Mercedes or Audi.

The "greatness" of these motors is one reason why hardly any German manufacturer builds a sensible hybrid aggregate...

my 93 passat has close to 400,000KM on it, burns maybe a liter of oil for 4000KM

I have a 06 Jetta TDI and just turned 61K. YES 61K. I average 47MPG and run Bio once in a while. VW will deny warranty claims with anything over B5 (5% bio) The PD TDI is great, the glow plugs are not slow and don't even come on over 40F. For more info check out www.tdiclub.com or go straight to the A5 forum http://forums.tdiclub.com/forumdisplay.php?f=68 If you are going to get one get it soon there won't be a 07 (new fed emissions laws) VW TDI you will have to wait for the 08 model to come out they have stopped production the the 06 so what you see is what you get.

last time i checked the most used diesels in cemis // work toys derive from DOMESTIC manufacturing...there has to be a reason for that

imo the best diesel company is CAT

btw why does where i live have anything to do with this?

haven't read the entire post, but to answer your question the downside to diesel fuel is it is not as common as gasoline - I drive a diesel truck and luckily have a station that carries diesel around the corner.

in my area diesel is also slightly more expensive than regular 87octane gas.

I still wouldn't trade my diesel truck for a gas engine - love the power and i can throw a 7,000 trailer on the back of it and get the sme fuel economy as i do unloaded.

Having been a fully indentured tradesman Automotive Diesel Mechanic since 1977. I say that diesels rule I think the best idea for a commuter would be a Hybrid with a "diesel" running on Liquid Petroleum Gas or Liquid Natural Gas. I know some of you will laugh but think carefully. The Hybrid idea is economical to start with tied to that is the diesel priciple of metered fuel delivery and the LPG cost and emissions values a winner in all areas.

NB while we call diesels that because they generally use Diesel or distilate as fuel "Compression Ignition" engines the correct term can run on various fuels. I regularly work on one motor that runs on methane from a landfill project
