There always has to be one serious-minded windbag in every thread, and this time I drew the short straw (). The "Prisoner of Mother England" thing is an old chestnut - an urban legend. If any of you are interested in where the term "pom" *really* comes from, it's ultimately from "Pomegrant", a rhyming slang mixture of "pomegranate" and "immigrant".
