New Feature Suggestion: Upgrade a Picture
Currently if a user submits a photo to upload and a lower resolution version of the picture is already in the database, the picture is rejected for upload without no further recourse provided. This has become a quite common occurrence in my experience.
Assuming that the site would benefit from replacing the lower resolution image with a higher resolution image, the following new feature is suggested:
Rather than complicate the existing image upload process, it is suggested that a new option be provided in the existing suite of icons above existing images that allows a user to submit an "upgrade" to an existing image. When the user selects this option, the user is prompted to upload an image file. After successfully receiving this image file, the system performs a quick check to confirm that the submitted uploaded image would trigger the duplicate image condition on the existing image that the current image upload procedure already includes. If it does, the system queues the uploaded image for review by a moderator. If the new uploaded image is confirmed to be a higher resolution version of the existing by the moderator, the new image replaces the existing image in the database, thus allowing comments, tags, placement in lists, and other references to be maintained, and the lower resolution image is discarded. Perhaps the submitter also receives a credit mutation for upgrading. If the moderator determines that the submitted image is not a higher resolution version of the old image, the image is rejected; perhaps the submitted loses a credit for wasting the moderators' time.
The moderation step might not be necessary depending on how good the image duplication logic is. If so, this would significantly simplify implementation.
