Would the US be better off with prohibition of alcohol?

Yeah I know we tried this before in the US and it was a law basically no one obeyed, it also financed and allowed the mob to get their claws into our society in a way we'll never be able to undo. It was a miracle it lasted as long as it did, something like 11 years. When I think of all the nasty shit, dumb antics, addiction, fucking patently sub-human behavior, deaths from everything from drunk driving to schirrossis(sp?) of the liver, sheer money wasted, lives destroyed and everything else bad it brings about, would we not be better off without alcohol at least in theory? I mean, taken in total, how the hell are we better off because of booze?

I guess when you get down to it, I'm just a very sober minded person. I've had groups of friends who never got together without a lot to drink, I mean never. I doubt they would have even gotten together unless there was going to be booze present. My moderation always made me the odd man out, though I did try to see what they saw in it. Drinking was just never that pleasurable to me. The older I get, the more severely I frown on anything but moderate drinking. It's folly, a total waste of time, soul and life. There's nothing more pathetic to me than some person who just can't hold it. When I see people stumbling around, I just say to myself "Fuck, how much more could that guy lower himself as a human being?". Anyhow, just a thought I welcome comments on, though I know this is one of those posts where I'm basically asking for it. Is ANYONE here a self-styled moderate drinker? Maybe Im just lucky to not like it all that much.

Sorry Jeff. If you guys did ban alcohol again, some of us Canadian buggers would see it as an opportunity to make money just like during the prohibition days. The almighty dollar will always supercede the best intentions of people. Sad but true. Not to mention the tidal wave of Corona etc. that would be coming up from your southern border.

I don't think Banning booze is the solution,those people that take it too far and drink and drive and all the other stuff are gonna get their fix one way or another.Be it alcohol or something else.It's something wrong with them not the alcohol.IMO

Alcohol is good in moderation, but this binge drinking craze thats sweeping the UK is getting silly.

I'm a recovering alcoholic. I've not touched a single drop of alcohol in over 11 years. My last drink was Sept. 16, 1994. I know first hand how it ruins lives and families. But making alcohol illegal isn't the answer. Education is the key. Don't stop the supply, stop the demand. I know my own life is MUCH better without it.

The real question is whether or not homosexual penguins fighting for civil rights during a nuclear holocaust whilst canniballizing of their young as a result of a food shortage caused by giant fleas mating promiscously with Mormons over winter is relevant to this topic...

I completely agree with rainbow demon. I, too, am in recovery and can atest that the problem is/was me ..... not alcohol in general. I know lots of people who drink in varying degrees and lead normal lives. As society races forward with more demands on us, more and more people seemingly feel the need to escape their own skin to feel "better" about themselves. Lots of them turn to adictive substances to get the job done. Some people get hooked on porn and start acting out inappropriately .... do we want a total ban on porn to solve that probem? I think not. Education is the answer.

Prohibition had worse effects than legalized alcohol, much as the current Prohibition against drugs has costs way beyond what legalization would have.

You ask this on a site filled with porn, which many ask the same question about. You could ask the same of chocolate cake or fast cars or Yanni CDs. Alcohol in and of itself is not a problem. It is the lack of personal responsibility that causes the problems.

dont take this the wrong way, but just because some people are horrible inconsiderate humans, everyone should suffer? alcohol doesnt cause everyone who drinks it to get uncontrollably drunk and then to recklessly drive

the problem there isnt the alcohol, it's the drinking and driving

so make it tougher to drink and drive, put breathalizers in cars maybe?

Any law banning anything is a bad thing, all it does is give the government more control over our lives. Why should they have a say whether or not we get drunk and make asses out of ourselves? Some people can't handle it, others can, ya don't punish the masses for the mistakes of the few. Many people feel that porn breeds serial killers and rapists, so I guess we should make that illegal too because some people can't handle it and the arguement can be made that the world would be better without it. Good for you, you choose not to drink, I don't come to your house trying to funnel liquor down your throat so don't go to the government and try and take the liquor out of my house. Everyone has the right to choose for themselves. Why is it most people recovering from addiction automatically assume everyone else in the world is as weak as they were?
