THE HEADBUTT: The headbutt was an obivious foul, but IMO very deserving and should have been followed by a stiff right uppercut, then maybe another headbutt. The headbuttee seems to have exceptional pussyball skills.

PUSSYBALL: Generally this world cup sucked NOT because of the lack of skill, but of the new style of football called pussyball which roughly means that players hit the ground and hold their leg as soon as they lose the ball. This is ruining the game. BTW Italy are the kings of diving also known as pussyball.

Peace...

Ha, i agree. Nah not exactly - but Zidane is a true legend, this was his last ever game, he went out in style, left his mark so to speak. He knew what he was doing, good luck to the man. He showed more ability than any other play throughout the tournament, and many others, and THAT is what he will be remembered by.

And to those of you comparing Football ("Soccer" to sports more native to the USA, in terms of television evidence, stopping play time for decicions etc - football will never go down that path, and thats why it will remain the most popular sport on the planet. "The Beauiful Game", its commonly referred to, it wouldnt be so beautiful if play stopped every few minutes (as in American "Football", NHL, blah blah, those shit sports) for judgements on play to be made. A good referee lets a game flow, and refrains from stopping play unless absoloutely necessary, he lets footballers play football. Incorrect refereeing decisions will always be part of the game, i hope. Otherwise it wont be quite the same game. A football match gathers such tension mounting momentum if it is allowed to flow, and for 90 minuites, if youre lucky, you can watch genuine genius express its self.

Oh man, those girlie boys who cry all game long sure do make the game beautiful! I can't wait to see them on the ground in four more years.

While what he did was dirty and definately a red card, the none of the officals saw it, and unlike the NFL, seeing it on instant replay means dick all in soccer. The ref had no business showing a red card at all, they simply missed the offence.

That said, I would love to have Zidane smash his head into every single Italian player. They played the weakest soccer and the dirtiest soccer I have ever seen. They dive constantly, pull shirts constantly and quite frankly, didn't have to earn this win. Its a shame to see such a huge game decided by a referee.

so a guy headbutts another guy, and because the refs didnt see it and perhaps only saw it on replay people are complaining??? i dont get it

did the action deserve a penalty? no doubt about it! no controversy what so ever

Fully deserved a penatly, but no one saw it happen. The call was made AFTER it was seen on the big screen, and thats not how ANY professional sport is played. A ref can't stand around and wait for a replay to make a call, thats absurd. The NFL is the exception because a call can be challenged, but a coach can't challenge the ref to make a penalty, even if hes right.

The red card was correct. The BIG screens do not show those type of replays. Any controversial replay wont be shown on the big screen for protection of the fans/players/referees , just so every1 watches their match and dont cause a brawl. It is a FIFA rule.

The incident was clearly shown on the "BIG" screens inside the ground, sorry.

as soon as i saw it, i thought this is what zidane wanted to do to make his final mark; leave with controversy because it was purely premeditated after materazzi made whatever comment to him. (kinda like the cantona kung fu kick) ..maybe i'm wrong ....but in years to come, zizou will always be remembered for that headbutt and as a great player.

It was not shown on the big screen. That's why the fans (the French) boo'd the ref and the Italian players for the rest of the game and the ceremony at the end because most haven't seen what happened. They just saw the ref giving Zidane the red card for no reason (of course there was a reason for it). Some probably seen what happened but the majority didn't. They don't show these kind of replays on the big screen either.
The fourth official on the outside has a monitor so I guess he saw it and told the ref on the pitch or the linesman.

Which is exactly the problem. The 4th official is NOT to be invovled in the outcome of the game. They are there for review and disciplanary actions to be taken AFTER the outcome of the game. All decisions about what goes on on the pitch is to be decided by the three officials ON THE PITCH, not the guy with the replay machine.

Zidane, despite the obvious nasty intentions he had, should not have been tossed off, none of the officals who were on the feild saw it.

Well I don't see it your way cause then this would leave the door open to all kinds of brutal fouls that would go without a penalty to it as long as none of the officials see it. (I know it happens a lot like Figo against Holland)
Let's say Zidane would've hit Matarazzi in the face and the Italian would've had to leave the game because he was bleeding and they already used up all their substitutions. Then the Italians would've been one man down and Zidane would've still been in the game. Then France wins the World Cup and after the game is over the 4th official or any other official would've called the foul and Zidane would've been punished to stay out of several games after the World Cup (I know he was retiring anyway) it would've been unfair because the damage was made in the game and it could've been a deciding moment.
I also disagree on the fact that the 4th official is not supposed to be there to help the ref on the pitch to make decisions, because that's why he got installed in the first place. A ref and even his linesmen can never see everything that is going on so in my opinion the 4th official is there to help out in situations like that.

Anyway all could've and would've and whatever aside. Everyone has a different opinion on it and it won't change what happened last night. And it clearly wasn't Zidane's sending off that caused France to lose the game. Penalties are always a big gamble and one has to lose. Tell us English about it...

the fourth official does get involved in the actual game that is why they are also called assistant referees if the 4th official is sworn at by the teams manager or subs bench he can make the referee aware and have the offender dismissed. in my opinion itlay deserved the win and france were the cheaters has anyone seen frances only goal of the game, ut was a penalty when the player brought down was not even touched and italy scored their equaliser from open play. ZZ has always been an overated player imo yeah hes skilful but he hasn't done anything i haven't seen done before.

biggest cheaters of the world cup ::::: PORTUGAL

And we Americans are arrogant. That's just it. If you don't understand the game don't come here talking nonsense at least provide some substance to the conversation. I am sure you'll find the rules some where online.

Peace

I've also seen there is a game somewhere on the net already where you as Zidane have to knock out as many Materazzis as possible before the ref gives you the red card.
Couldn't find a link to it yet though...
