I was just sitting here thinking of all those poor souls on the gulf coast, especially New Orleans, and got to wondering who could raise the spirits of those people. If I was in their shoes I know who I would think about to help me through the day, Jimmy Valvano! This guy, for those of you that don't know, was the former coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack basketball team that won the national championship in 1983. He came down with cancer and died about ten years later. Only a couple of months before his death, he attended the ESPY awards. The ESPY's are awarded by the ESPN sports network. He was there to receive the first Arthur Ashe humanitarian award. Mind you this guy couldn't walk at all for the previous few weeks from weakness associated with his advanced cancer. Most people thought that he would receive the award via satellite because his condition was so grave. But he came anyway. And whenever his name was called, the man walked up on stage under what little power he had in his legs, on his own, which in itself was inspiring. He then proceeded to give the most wonderfull speech I have ever heard. Here's a few lines.........

"When people say to me how do get through life or each day, it's the same thing. To me there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this everyday of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears. Could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, your going to have something special."

"I said it before and I want to say it again. Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. But it cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are gonna carry on forever. Never give up! Never give up!"

I hope most if not all that read this thread can relate to it and post your most inspirational person in here. Just one rule....NO joking around and posting sarcastic crap! All serious and meaningfull posts are wanted and appreciated.

Hi im 16 year old Australian(you know that place down there) and i have always grown up as seen as the bad sheep of my family being the last son and trouble maker. at the age of 15 i started playing rugby league and meet a bloke callel Phil, from the first moment he met me hes seemed to always be intrasted in what i had to say and most of the time i looked to him for guidance and still do. Phil was a Chippie Tats what we call a carpenter down here u konw a builder, one school holidays to keep me out of trouble he let me come and work for him on his site and that is when my passion for woodwork, carpentry and working with my hands started. this year i am looking to start my apprenticeship training to become a chippie.

you may say he is only a builder but to me he is a very special person. he has been a second father to me (since mine dosent care) and i believe i have been like a son to him. thats why Phil is my most inspirational person in my life. Thanks Phil your a true mate and if it wasnt for you i would probally be in prison on the streets or most likely dead.

I would also have to say my family; but mainly my mother. Being a single parent, I see how hard she works to make sure her kids have what they need. I can honestly respect that, and respect is something that she has earned from many people.

(offtopic) Welcome the new bunny!
Says the bunny's a female.. but damn, another Aussie.

Because of his determination and will power.
(Don't agree so much of hos poitical views, nonetheless a great man.)

Because of who he was and what he did.
There was no person as down to earth and kind as this man.
(I know many of you find this weird, frankly, I don't care what You think)
