That guy just needs some attention. But that shouldn't be the problem of the complete city. He should go see some shrink instead. Imagine if someone like him showed up every other day ?

The problem with everyone's suggestions of bean bag guns and tranquilizers is this: If the police used those, and then the guy lost his balance, fell, and hung to death, the guy's family would be suing the city for wrongful death. It truly is a sad world.

He should be strapped in a chair like the dude in 'A clockwork orange' with his eyes forced open and be made to watch weeks and weeks of 'The Dr. Phil show' on a constant loop!!!

i've saved a few lives in my day. being a student at a (fairly) prestigious art school you meet a lot of self destructive people, so i would have done with him what i have done many times before. i would ask about his problem, and i would listen, and offered some kind words. that is if i could get past the police barricade. some times all people need is a kind heart and a kind ear.

If that kind of punishment were waiting for me, I'd jump.

This hangover is killing me.

Law enforcement actually have quit a pickle when it come to suicide calls. Dating back to merry ol' England, the justice system as we know it today has its roots in English common law. There were only ten laws to start with, one of them being suicide. It's technically a crime to commit suicide. and sence all criminal law today is considered commited against not only the victim, but the entire society (including the person who commits it), hence the reason for a 'public prosecutor' , a person committing suicide is considered commiting a crime against themselves and the public. Police officers dealing with a suicide then have to protect the person making the attempt and the public. So, I guess its the people who were stuck in traffic becuase of this guy who are at fault for not submitting and voting in a law to have to cops deal differently.

Human Life has a lot of value in this country. Be thankful. In a lot of countries across the world, it doesnt and that's sad... especially if you've lived in any of those countries.

that true. go and tell some cop in Sierra Leon, Africa that "you better get back or I'll gonna do it!"

If you aren't rich, see if the cop cares.

The cops should have just written him a ticket for obstructing traffic and left....

The guy should have the right to commit suicide. Its just his selfish method thats in question.
Perhaps cities should build places that people disenchanted with life can jump from without obstructing the flow of traffic.

I was thinking more like a tallish building with a dumper at the bottom to catch the suicidals.
Maybe employ a city official to get some paperwork filled in. ie Reason for jumping,a short last will. any last words etc.
Don't try and talk them out of it. Just streamline the whole operation to cut down the interference to the city.

i like that bit in one of the 'lethal weapon' films where mel gibson's character handcuffs the attempted suicider to himself and just jumps off the building obviously freaking the fuck out of this guy...
