Les Boreades (G)
A riveting new stage production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's last opera, composed at the age of 80. Abandoned for 242 years, it was performed in full for the first time in 1982. This 1763 Broque masterpiece speaks resonantly of the beauties of liberty and freedom of choice, recounting the mythological story of Queen Alphises's ordeal. Ordered by Fate to marry a Boreade prince, descendant of the North Wind, Queen Alphise is presented with two eligible choices: Calisis and Borilee. However, Alphise is in love with Abaris, a man of unknown parentage. She repeatedly rejects the Boreade princes and eventually abdicates the throne for the love of Abaris. Directed by Robert Carson with the Opera National de Paris.
