great thread Kanzen. I've had my imac about 8 months now and I'm still learning.

I use "toast" for burning dvd and cds etc. It makes it soo easy. Right click any movie file and "toast it" and the program does the rest.

I also use Azureus Vuse for my bittorrent app.

I dont know if it will work on a MAC but i use a prog. called GSpot itll tell you the codecs.
But if you use the prog. Kanzen suggested (VLC) you shouldnt need it that thing is the fing BOMB.....
Also to fuckface17 if its alot of files named .rar01-.rar(whatever) open the first one and it should unpack it if you have winrar of course.

But also a note on a site i found if the file is (videoname.wmv.rar) just take out the .rar.

I mention that cause i ran into that issue not realizing i had Vista set to not show known file types.

I hate that Windows feature. But I just bought a Mac, so why should I care.

Macs aren't very popular in Finland, I'm the only one I know that has one, so this thread will probably be very useful to me in the future.

This thing looks good, works like a dream and responds much faster than what I've experienced with Windows boxes, but a downside is that this GUI is just weird and key combinations require quite a bit of guesswork.

One problem already. For some weird reason this computer seems to think the first day of the week is Sunday. While it must obviously be so in some part of the world, it's definitely not so in Finland (nor anywhere in Europe), and I cannot seem to find a way to change it to Monday. Could someone help me with this?

Another weird thing is that this puts the euro sign before the amount of money (as if it were dollar sign), and I don't find a way to change that, either...

Update... Changing region in the formats dialog to "Finland" fixed the currency format, changed dates to dd.mm.yyyy and switched to 24 hour clock. Who would have thought. Stupid me.

But iCal still thinks week begins on Sunday.

Hey Kanzen, I have a bit of a problem whenever I log into WBW. Once I sign in, all of the text shifts to the left side of the page whenever I'm at the homepage. I've also been trying to sign up to be a sponsor, but once I click on the upgrade button it takes me to the page where it talks about all the perks of being a sponsor, but I can never click to actually upgrade it since everything has shifted on top of eachother. Is there anything that you know of that would prevent this from happening? Thanks for any suggestions.

Ah... It's the top menu that I find unintuitive. After using Windows and X Window System apps I'm used to having menu attached to the application window. Thanks.

However, simply shutting iCal down and starting it again (after changing the region to Finland) did the same thing.

When I download movies from WBW, all i'm getting is a Green screen. My Quicktime and other downloaded software plays all other movie clips just fine. Any idea?

The CSS file is not being loaded completely or at all. Either the transmission of data is dropped or not being loaded. Try using another browser to see if the issue disolves. Try Safari, Camino, Firefox, or even Opera to see if the page will download completely.

Camino - http://caminobrowser.org
Firefox - http://mozilla.com
Opera - http://opera.com

You can use VLC to watch them or install Perian to view them from Quicktime Player.

VLC - http://videolan.org
MPlayer - http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/
Perian - http://perian.org/

Green screen means you don't have the appropiate video codec. Install DivX 6 from their Mac site. Or use VLC/MPlayer to view the file. They support DivX from internally.

I'll try the VLC. I downloaded DivX for Mac and that got me to the Green screen, but no farther. I'll let you know how the VLC goes. Thanks for the advice.

Hey Kanzen. I've been wondering, whenever I had a PC I was able to clean up my computer by running a defragment program. Now that I have a mac, is there a way to do this to clean it up? Thanks for any help.

Defragmentation is handled by the system automatically. For additional system maintenance (manual cron, log flushing, database maintenance, etc.) you can use Onyx, MainMenu, or Cocktail.

Expose: It's great. Wonderful way to navigate through your windows. I found that setting my top right corner to "Show All Windows" and my top left corner to "Application Windows" is a great way to "step back" and see what the hell is going on. apple menu-->System Preferences-->Expose--> Set corners with drop down list.

just a quick tip.

hey kanzen, i have another question. I was wondering if you could give me any tips about file encryption for my mac. I just got a new external hard drive and wanted to keep it somewhat protected in case I ever lost it. Any tips would be appreciated.. Thanks.

Depends on the situation fuckface17.

1. If you need these files to be cross platform compatible, encrypt each file on a need-by-need basis with a file format like RAR or 7-ZIP. Just choose a lengthly password that will be hard to guess.

2. If you need these files for only your Mac, just create an encrypted Sparse Disk with Disk Utility. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. From the menu select New > Blank Disk Image..., a dialog will pop-up asking what options you want. At the top put the filename you wish (preferably ambiguous). Choose a Volume Name, then the size of the volume (Choose a good sizeable chunk for a good allocation of files. Then in the Encryption choose either 128-bit AES or 256-bit AES and then from Image Format "Read/write disk image" and click create. A dialog box will appear and ask you to input a password. Enter one and then again into verify. Make sure to type it and not copy&paste. The password strength will be shown to you. If you are having trouble picking one, click the key button for a password generator. Once done entering a password, uncheck the "Remember password in my keychain" and click OK. Drag the files that you want onto the disk image. Once you're done, unmount the volume. Whenever you mount the disk image again, you will be required to enter the password. DO NOT FORGET THE PASSWORD, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVERY ANY OF THE DATA IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT.

If you prefer pseduo-doing things from a command prompt, I could provide some very basic scripts (can't use spaces in the file name) that lock/unlock individual files using "openssl" (included with OS X, but is FOSS). You can then chose any encryption type supported by openssl, which is quite a few.
